Marley Angus (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity) each notched two goals and two assists to lead the Tigers to a 25-6 victory over Cortland in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament, Sunday, hosted by Stockton (N.J.).
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT (11-0) will host Colorado College next Saturday (May 22) at 1:00 p.m. in the tournament quarterfinals, followed by the day's other matchup between Tufts and York (Pa.) at 4:00 p.m. The winners will advance to Sunday's tournament semifinals at 2:00 p.m. at RIT with a berth in the national championship on the line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tied, 2-2, with 7:01 left in the first quarter, RIT scored four-unanswered goals, including two in the final 7.7 seconds, to build a 6-2 edge after 15 minutes of action.
- Hollinger opened the second quarter with a goal off a nifty dodge past a Red Dragon defender for a 7-2 Tiger lead with 13:42 on the clock.
- Cortland notched back-to-back goals to pull back within three with 11:45 on the clock, but Spencer Bell (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored on a rising shot from right goal line extended to kick off an 8-1 Tiger run which yielded a 15-5 RIT lead after 30 minutes of play.
- The Tigers put the game out of reach with seven-unanswered goals in the third quarter, including two by Hollinger, to carry a 22-5 edge into the final quarter.
- Tiger goalie Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) stopped nine shots in 37 minutes of work to earn the victory as RIT out-shot Cortland, 50-27, including a 41-18 margin in shots on goal.
GAME NOTES
- RIT advanced to its 16th NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearance.
- RIT improved to 24-20 all-time versus Cortland, including a 4-2 mark in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers also won their fourth-straight NCAA matchup with the Red Dragons, earning victories in the 2017 and 2015 semifinals and the 2013 quarterfinals. Cortland beat RIT in the 1986 and 2010 quarterfinals.
- RIT won its 30th NCAA Tournament game in program history, improving to 30-21 all-time and 10-2 in the second-round.
- The Tigers won by their fifth-highest margin in NCAA Tournament history and scored the most goals since a 26-3 victory over New England College in the 2018 second round.
- Colorado College advanced to the quarterfinals with a 19-6 victory over Centre (Ky.). Tufts advanced with a 19-15 victory at St. John Fisher while York defeated host Franklin & Marshall, 13-9, in the day's other action.
