ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior midfielder
Ryan Rosenblum (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) tallied three goals, and senior goalie
Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) made 16 saves as the No. 1 RIT (3-0) men's lacrosse team went on the road to beat SUNY Cortland (1-1) 12-8 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
Shots were 45-37 in favor of RIT, winning the ground ball battle 36-31. The Tigers won 10-of-23 face-offs, went 25-of-29 on clearing attempts and scored on their only man-up chance.
Rosenblum led the Tigers with three goals, and juniors
Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School) and
Marley Angus (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity) each tallied two goals and an assist. Junior
Ryan Barnable (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) finished with a goal and two assists, while classmate
Spencer Bell (Fairport, NY/Fairport) tallied a goal and an assist.
Senior
Nick Montemorano (Victor, NY/Victor) won 10 draws and had eight ground balls for RIT. Hare improved to 3-0 on the season, making 16 saves in net for the Tigers. Senior
Patrick Shoemay (Surrey, British Columbia/Holy Cross) and
Taylor Jensen (New Westminster, BC/New Westminster) each caused two turnovers.
Zak Jones, Brandon Stiles and Matthew Thrasher each scored two goals for the Red Dragons. Brian Williams won nine draws and Marc Esposito took the loss in net for Cortland, making 14 saves.
Goals from Angus and Montemorano gave RIT an early 2-0 lead. After a Jones goal cut the lead to 2-1, Rosenblum scored his first of the day off an assist from Barnable to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Cortland scored two straight goals to begin play in the second quarter, tying the score at 3-3 on a Thrasher goal. RIT tallied late in the first half when Barnable scored off a pass from Angus with :15 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.
Commandant gave RIT a 5-3 lead on his goal :17 seconds into the third quarter off an assist from senior
Larson Sundown (Basam, NY/Akron). The Red Dragons scored three straight, taking a 6-5 lead on Jones' goal with 6:11 to play in the quarter.
RIT responded, scoring five straight goals, including four straight to end the third quarter to lead 9-6. Rosenblum,
Pent Eistrat (Toronto, Ontario/Humberside Collegiate), Angus and Bell each scored in the third quarter, while Rosenblum opened the fourth-quarter scoring with his third of the game to extend RIT's lead to 10-6.
Dante Yacavone and Stiles each scored in the fourth quarter to cut the RIT lead to 10-8, but goals from Commandant and Shoemay late in regulation made it a 12-8 final score.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, March 24, at 7 p.m. at No. 12 St. John Fisher College.
