BUFFALO, N.Y. – RIT sophomore forward
Caleb Moretz notched a pair of goals, but it was host Canisius defeating the Tigers, 5-3, Friday night at the LECOM Harborcenter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Canisius caused a turnover at the top of the Tiger zone before junior defenseman Kevin Obssuth finished the ensuing two-on-one break to open the scoring with 10:14 on the clock.
- RIT tied the score with 7:06 remaining in the first period. Senior defenseman Dan Willett took a shot from the point that rebounded outside the left post. Senior defenseman Regan Seiferling collected the loose puck and slipped a pass through a crowd back into the slot for a finish by Moretz.
- Canisius scored the first two goals of the second period. Sophomore forward Keaton Mastrodonato fought off a Tiger defenseman to score with 13:55 on the clock before junior forward J.D. Pogue notched a power play goal at 8:59 after RIT was whistled for too many men of the ice.
- Moretz scored off his own rebound from outside the right post to bring RIT back within one with 7:38 on the clock but Pogue scored his second of the game off a short rebound to push the Griffins back on top by two, 4-2, with 4:58 left in the second period.
- The teams were scoreless until late in the third period when Canisius took a three-goal lead on a tally by Mitchell Martan with 2:53 on the clock.
- RIT got one back in the final minute after junior forward Kobe Walker flipped a puck on goal from the top of the Canisius zone that rebounded to senior forward Alden Dupuis for a short finish in front.
GAME NOTES
- Canisius out-shot RIT, 35-27, as the Tigers allowed the most shots this season since Clarkson put 36 on net in the second game of the season (Nov. 29).
- Moretz has four goals and two assists over the Tigers' last four games. He also won 16 of 22 face-offs during tonight's contest.
- RIT sophomore goalie Kolby Matthews totaled 30 saves in his first collegiate loss.
- Senior forward Jake Hamacher was credited with an assist on Moretz' second goal for his 80th career point. He has compiled 33 goals and 47 assists in 123 appearances over the last four years to rank 20th in scoring during the Tigers' Division-I era. .
- Dupuis notched his 30th career goal, becoming RIT's 21st player to achieve the plateau during the Division-I era. He has totaled 62 points on 30 goals and 32 assists in 116 appearances in an Tiger sweater
