ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 4 (1-0) RIT men's lacrosse team kicked off its 2020 season with a 17-4 win over Ohio Wesleyan University (0-1) from a sunny but chilly RIT Turf Field Saturday afternoon. Eight different Tigers tallied two or more points Saturday, while RIT featured 11 different goal scorers.
Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School),
Spencer Bell (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and
Alex Shuster (New Albany, OH/St. Charles Prep) each tallied four points for RIT. Commandant finished with two goals and two assists, Bell scored three goals, and Shuster handed out three assists.
Dawson Tait (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa) tallied two goals and an assist, while
Ryan Barnable (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) finished with a goal and two assists.
Taylor Jensen (New Westminster, BC/New Westminster) and
Zeb Hollinger (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) each scored their first career goals Saturday.
Nick Montemorano (Victor, NY/Victor) won 19-of-21 face-offs and had 16 ground balls.
Chris Becker (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) and
Erik Jakobsze (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) each caused three turnovers, and
Brett Naylor (Clarence, NY/Clarence), Tait, and Bell each caused two turnovers.
Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) picked up the win in for the Tigers, making seven saves.
Luke Swaddling tallied two goals for Ohio Wesleyan, while Will Anton finished with a goal and an assist. Joey Sichenzia took the loss in net for the Battling Bishops, making 17 saves.
Ohio Wesleyan led 2-1 early in the first quarter on goals from Swaddling and Anton. The Tigers scored the final two goals of the first quarter to lead 4-2, and ran off six straight goals in the second quarter to lead 9-2 at halftime. Tait scored twice in the first half for the Tigers, while Barnable finished with a goal and an assist.
Ohio Wesleyan scored early in the third quarter to cut the RIT lead to 9-3, but the Tigers went on another run, rattling off six consecutive goals, taking a 15-3 lead on Bell's third goal of the game with 54 seconds remaining in the quarter. Hollinger and Wolf each scored in the fourth quarter to make it a 17-4 final.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22, when the Tigers play Bates College at 4 p.m. on the campus of UMass-Amherst.
