Men's Ice Hockey moves past Holy Cross, 4-2

WORCESTER, Mass. – RIT jumped out 3-0 second-period lead en route to a 4-2 victory at Holy Cross in Atlantic Hockey action, Saturday.

Goals by senior defenseman Darren Brady (Lake Orion, MI/New Jersey Titans), sophomore forward Will Calverley (Scarborough, Ontario/Chilliwack Chiefs) and freshman forward Elijah Gonsalves (Scarborough, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) led the Tigers (14-11-3, 10-7-3 AHA) to the split with the Crusaders (9-13-5, 8-11-3 AHA) after falling, 4-3, on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • RIT jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after Brady took a nice feed across the front of the Holy Cross crease from senior forward senior forward Nick Bruce (Fall River, Nova Scotia/Johnstown Tomahawks) and scored inside the right post 52 seconds into the game.
  • Calverley finished a rush off a cross from sophomore forward Merritt Oszytko (Edmonton, Alberta/Fort McMurray Oil Barons) with 4:03 on the clock as the Tigers led, 2-0, at the end of the first period.
  • In the second period, RIT took advantage of a Holy Cross hooking call as senior defenseman Adam Brubacher (Elmira, Ontario/Powell River Kings) shuffled a short backhander through the crease to Gonsalves for a finish inside a wide open right post for a 3-0 lead with 15:33 on the clock.
  • Holy Cross got one back after junior forward Pete Kessel scored on a tough angle shot from the right flank with 3:12 left in the second.
  • The Crusaders made it a one-goal game with a power play tally by Kessel with 3:57 left in regulation.
  • Holy Cross pulled its goalie for an extra skater with under a minute left in regulation, but junior forward Alden Dupuis (Edmonton, Alberta/Bonnyville Pontiacs) brought a puck down the left boards and scored into an empty net with 22.9 on the clock to seal the win.

GAME NOTES

  • RIT junior goalie Logan Drackett (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Canucks) was credited with 28 saves to earn his 13th win of the season. He also made his 80th career start in a Tiger sweater.
  • Junior forward Jake Hamacher (Corona, CA/Dubuque Fighting Saints) and junior defenseman Dan Willett (Bayville, NY/Bloomington Thunder) made their 100th career appearances for RIT.
  • Brubacher's assist puts him one point shy of becoming the Tigers' 13th 100-point scorer during the Division I era.
  • RIT scored a power play goal for the third time in its last four games.

WHAT'S NEXT

RIT heads to Pittsburgh for an Atlantic Hockey doubleheader at Robert Morris next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 7-8). Face-off both nights is slated for 7:05 p.m.
