Men's lacrosse loses to Williams in double overtime of NCAA Quarterfinal

Tigers finish 2019 season with 20-2 overall record

ROCHESTER, NY – The No. 1 RIT (20-2) men's lacrosse team was defeated 12-11 in double overtime by No. 5 Williams College (18-3) in the Quarterfinal of the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship. Kevin Stump scored with 58 seconds in the second overtime to send the Ephs to the national semifinals for the first time in program history. Williams will take on Amherst College Sunday.

"Sad that it came to an end the way it did today," said RIT head coach Jake Coon. "The guys worked hard and did everything we expected of them, but just came up a bit short. I was proud of our effort today and all season."

Shots were 46-45 in favor of RIT. The Tigers won the ground ball battle 45-43, and won 13-of-28 face-offs. RIT cleared the ball 17-of-28 times and went 0-for-1 with the man advantage. Shawn Nally (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) and Dawson Tait (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa) each tallied three goals and five points for the Tigers. Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) took the loss in net, making 18 saves. Trevor Smyth (Orangeville, Ontario/The Kiski School) led the Tigers with four caused turnovers, while Nick Montemorano (Victor, NY/Victor) won 13 draws and had seven ground balls.

John Hincks and Stump each scored three goals for Williams, while Brendan Hoffman tallied two goals. Harry Gahagan picked up the win in net for the Ephs, making 13 saves.

Williams scored the lone goal of the first quarter on a Hincks goal with 6:14 to play in the opening stanza, as both teams turned the ball over 10 times. The Tigers got on the board 35 seconds into the second quarter on a Nally goal that tied the score at 1-1. Tait scored back-to-back goals, first from Cameron Gebhardt (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and the second off a feed from Smyth in transition, giving RIT a 3-1 lead with 3:46 remaining in the half. Tim Saffold scored with 2:31 remaining in the opening half to cut the RIT lead to 3-2 at the break.
 
Both offenses eruped for five goals in the third quarter. The Ephs came out and scored the first two goals of the second half, taking a 4-3 lead on a Hincks goal at the 11:37 mark of the third quarter. The Tigers answered back with two straight goals, taking a 5-4 lead on Nally's goal off an assist from Pent Eistrat (Toronto, Ontario/Humberside Collegiate).

Williams answered with three straight goals. Cory Lund gave the Ephs a 6-5 lead on his goal off an assist from Jake Haase at the 8:26 mark, and Stump extended the Williams lead to 7-5 on his goal with 4:23 to play in the third quarter. RIT came right back with three straight goals of its own. Damon Currie (Guelph, Ontario/The Hill Academy) cut the Williams lead to 7-6 on his goal with 2:09 to play and Spencer Bell (Fairport, NY/Fairport) tied the game at 7-7 on RIT's next possession scoring off a feed from Nally. Nally would score off a wild sequence to with two seconds left in the quarter to give RIT the 8-7 lead after 45 minutes of play.

Matthew Seligson scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter, tying the game at 8-8 on his goal at the 11:07 mark. Ryan Barnable (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) broke the tie with his goal with 9:07 to play in regulation to give RIT a 9-8 lead. Tait took a feed from Nally and scored with 8:27 to play to give RIT a 10-8 lead, and Cam Isaac (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) scored a key goal, driving to the net with 7:23 remaining that gave RIT an 11-8 lead.
 
The Ephs would not give in, tallying three goals inside the final 6:24 to send the game into overtime. Stump cut the RIT lead to 11-9 on his goal with 6:24 remaining in regulation. Jared Strauss cut the RIT lead to 11-10 on his goal with 1:36 to play, and Brendan Hoffman tied the score at 11-11 on his goal with 57 seconds remaining.
 
RIT had a chance late in regulation, but Gahagan came up with a big stop. Both teams had their chances in the first overtime, but both defenses kept the other team off the scoreboard. Williams had two good chances early in the second overtime, but Hare came up with two big saves.

The Tigers had their chances in each overtime, including a shot in the second overtime that caromed off Gahagan's foot and out of harms way. With time running out in the second overtime, Stump took a pass form Strauss and beat Hare with a bouncing shot to send the Ephs to the national semifinal.

RIT and Williams met for the just the second time in program history Wednesday. RIT defeated Williams, 15-10 at Johns Hopkins University on March 28, 2014.
 
RIT finished with 365 goals on the season, fourth most in program history. RIT is now 23-10 in NCAA Tournament play under Coach Coon and 29-21 all-time in the national tournament. This was RIT's 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 21st trip overall. The senior class finishes their career with an impressive 79-8 record.
