ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (8-12, 1-3 Liberty League) split a doubleheader versus Liberty League rival Skidmore College (11-13, 1-3 Liberty League) from Tiger Stadium Sunday. RIT took game one, 10-0 in five innings, while Skidmore rebounded to win game two, 7-4.
The Tigers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning in game one and added three more in the fourth.
RIT loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning.
Haley Czerwinski (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) and
Hannah Trumble (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) hit back-to-back run scoring singles right after to give RIT a quick 2-0 lead. After a popup,
Olivia Doret (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) reached on an error, allowing a third run to score and make it 3-0 Tigers. RIT would score the next three runs without putting a ball in play, as
Raquel Estrada (Middletown, NY/Middletown),
Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva) and
Madisen Baldwin (Washougal, WA/Washougal) were all hit by pitches with the bases loaded to extend RIT's lead to 6-0.
Jill Vorreiter (Fisherville, KY/Mercy Academy of Louisville) would plate the seventh run with a single off the mitt of a diving first baseman.
Guinan roped a double to right center field that scored two runs and Baldwin doubled home Guinan in the bottom of the fourth to complete the scoring.
Guinan led the way with three RBI in game one, while Baldwin drove in a pair of runs. Doret and Estrada both scored twice.
Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) picked up her sixth win of the season, allowing just two hits, while striking out four batters in four innings.
Melissa Gould (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) fired a scoreless fifth inning to close out game one.
In game two, both teams scored an unearned run in the first inning. Skidmore would plate three unearned runs with two outs in the top of the fourth to make it 4-1 before
Laura Weintraub (Syosset, NY/Syosset) hit a double to left field that scored
Brianna Bilich (Penryn, CA/Del Oro) and Guinan in the bottom half of the inning.
The Thoroughbreds added a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to pick up the split.
Skidmore out-hit RIT, 12-8 in game two. Hannah Davis led the Thoroughbreds by going 3-for-4 with a double and RBI. She also picked up the win on the mound, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) in six innings.
Weintraub doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers. Estrada continued her strong offensive season by going 2-for-4 with a double and stolen base.
Sara Pasternack (Alden, NY/Alden) also drove in a run.
Adler started, going the first two innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits.
Abcde Cortinas (San Antonio, TX/Highlands) came on in relief and allowed five hits and four runs (one earned) over 2 1/3 innings to take the loss. Gould pitched the final 2 2/3 innings of relief.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, April 10 with a doubleheader at Buffalo State College that gets underway at 3 p.m.
