Softball drops final two contests of 2019 season at University of Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (10-24, 2-10 Liberty League) wrapped up the 2019 season with a pair of losses at University of Rochester (19-17, 9-5 Liberty League) on Sunday from Southside Field. Rochester won game one, 9-5 and took game two, 4-0.

RIT jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva) doubled to center field, scoring Raquel Estrada (Middletown, NY/Middletown), who reached on an error. The Yellowjackets responded in the bottom half of the inning, as Gianna Melillo hit a grand slam to give them a lead they would not relinquish.

Rochester would extend its lead to 9-2 after four innings before RIT mounted a rally with two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Guinan doubled twice and drove in a run, while senior Danielle Hotz (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) hit her first home run of the 2019 season, a blast to center field in the second inning. Hotz reached base three times and scored a pair of runs. Samm Carroll (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) also drove in a run and senior Madisen Baldwin (Washougal, WA/Washougal) hit a double.

Rochester had 13 hits in the opener. Melillo drove in five runs, while Jen Carson went 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBI. Elizabeth Bourne won her eighth game of the season on the mound, allowing seven hits and five runs (two earned) with five strikeouts in the complete-game effort.

In game two, Rochester scored three times in the bottom of the first inning and once in the second, while Hannah Leahy kept RIT off the scoreboard, scattering seven hits, while striking out five batters for her seventh win of the year.

Carson added two more hits for the Yellowjackets, including a double, to go along with a run scored and RBI. Rachael Pletz doubled and drove in two runs.

Guinan added two more hits for the Tigers. Seniors Olivia Doret (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) and Sarah Thayer (Tully, NY/Fabius-Pompey) added a hit apiece. Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) pitched all six innings for RIT, allowing 11 hits and four runs.
