FORT MYERS, FL – The RIT softball team (1-1) opened up the 2019 season by splitting a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Saturday. RIT defeated Western Connecticut State (1-1), 2-0 before falling to Lesley University (1-1), 11-7.
Versus Western Connecticut State, junior pitcher
Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) started the season on a strong note, allowing just one hit, while striking out three batters over five innings. Freshman
Abcde Cortinas (San Antonio, TX/Highlands) made her collegiate debut by retiring all six batters she faced for the save.
RIT would open the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, as
Jennifer Vickery (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) slammed her first collegiate hit, doubling in classmate
Brianna Bilich (Penryn, CA/Del Oro), who was hit by a pitch in her first collegiate plate appearance. RIT would add to the lead with an unearned run in the third inning.
Olivia Doret (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) had two hits, while
Danielle Hotz (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby),
Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva),
Raquel Estrada (Middletown, NY/Middletown),
Laura Weintraub (Syosset, NY/Syosset) and
Madisen Baldwin (Washougal, WA/Washougal) had one each.
In the second game of the day versus Lesley, the Tigers fell behind 9-0 before trying to mount a rally. RIT scored four times in the bottom of the fourth inning and three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Hotz went 3-for-5 with a run scored and RBI, while Estrada drove in a pair of runs and walked twice.
Samm Carroll (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) walked twice and scored two runs, while
Julia Vaillancourt (Braintree, MA/Braintree) and Weintraub were both 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Sara Pasternack (Alden, NY/Alden) had her first collegiate hit and RBI, while classmate
Hannah Trumble (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) scored her first run.
Jill Vorreiter (Fisherville, KY/Mercy Academy of Louisville) and
Haley Czerwinski (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) also made their collegiate debuts versus Lesley.
Riley Pickett and Ashleigh Acker drove in three runs apiece for Lesley.
The Tigers are right back in action on Sunday morning against Blackburn College at 9 a.m. and Martin Luther College at 11 a.m. from North Collier Regional Park #4.
