AUBURNDALE, FL – The RIT baseball team (2-4) rolled to a 9-0 win over New Jersey City College at Lake Myrtle Park on Monday. RIT hurlers
Collin Reformat (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster),
Jon Opalewski (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) and
Matt Vitro (Carmel, NY/Carmel) combined on a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts.
Reformat started and did not allow a hit over five innings, scattering five walks, while striking out six batters to earn his first collegiate win. Opalewski was excellent out of the pen, allowing just a one-out double to Nick LoGatto in the eighth inning, while striking out four batters. Vitro made his collegiate debut in the ninth inning, striking out a batter to close out the win.
RIT would open the scoring with two runs in the third inning, as
Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) doubled down the left field line to score
Kyle Watson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), who led off the inning with a double. After a walk by
Brad Dippold (St. Mary's PA/Elk County Catholic) and fielder's choice,
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) singled through the left side to plate Dippold to make it 2-0 Tigers.
Waterman would drive in Watson for the second time in the fourth inning, singling through the right side to make it 3-0.
RIT would explode for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend its lead to 8-0.
John Mikolaicyk (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) hit a long two-run home run to left field, his first as a Tiger to make it 5-0. After Waterman singled home Watson for the third time to give RIT a 6-0 lead,
Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy) hit a home run to left field, a two-run shot, making the score 8-0.
Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to complete the scoring.
RIT had 11 hits and seven walks in the win. Waterman and Zeglen each reached base three times. Waterman drove in three runs, while Watson was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Dippold walked twice and scored a pair of runs.
RIT is back in action on Wednesday versus Suffolk University at Osceola Park Stadium in Kissimmee, Fla.
