No. 3 men's Lacrosse opens 2019 season with convincing win at No. 11 Ohio Wesleyan

Tigers roll to 19-9 victory

DELAWARE, OH -- The No. 3 RIT (1-0) men's lacrosse team began the 2019 season with a convincing 19-9 win at No. 11 Ohio Wesleyan (0-1) Sunday afternoon. Six different Tigers tallied two or more goals as the Tigers won their sixth straight season opener.

The Tigers scored the first five goals of the game, leading 8-2 after first quarter. Ohio Wesleyan came back in the second quarter with four goals, but RIT tallied five in the frame to lead 13-6 at halftime. The Tigers outscored the Battling Bishops 4-2 in the third quarter, and 6-3 in the second half for the 10-goal win. 

Senior Cam Isaac (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) led RIT with four goals, while Ryan Barnable (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) tallied six points with two goals and four assists. Dawson Tait (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa), Cameron Gebhardt (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School) each scored three goals. Tait finished with five points, while Gebhardt had four points on the afternoon. Luke Henderson (Hespeler, Ontario/St. Benedict's Catholic) and Pent Eistrat (Toronto, Ontario/Humberside Collegiate) each scored a goal, and freshman Ryan Rosenblum (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) tallied two goals in his collegiate debut.

Junior Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) got the win net for RIT, making five saves. Nick Montemorano (Victor, NY/Victor) won 14-of-19 face-offs and had six ground balls, while Landon Nolta (Highlands Ranch, CO/Mountain Vista) won 8-of-10 draws. Chandler Allen (Ilderon, Ontario/Medway) grabbed three ground balls and was one of six Tigers to cause a turnover.

Max Tennant led Ohio Wesleyan with three goals, while Jack Jeschke tallied two goals. Zach Brasser took the loss in net for the Battling Bishops despite making 16 saves.

RIT came out firing in the first quarter, scoring the first five goals of the game. Isaac, Barnable, Henderson, Tait and Gebhardt each scored to give RIT an early five-goal edge. After an Ohio Wesleyan goal broke the run, Commandant tallied two straight and Tait tallied his second of the quarter to give the Tigers an 8-2 lead after 15 minutes of play.

Tait opened the second quarter with his man-up goal 14 seconds into the quarter. OWU scored two of the next three goals, cutting the RIT lead to 10-4 on Jeschke's goal at the 10:16 mark. The Tigers answered with three straight goals, increasing their lead to 13-4 on Rosenblum's first collegiate goal with 4:34 remaining in the half. The Battling Bishops scored two late goals to cut the RIT lead to 13-6 at halftime.

Isaac struck twice in the third quarter, while Barnable and Rosenblum each tallied. Defensively, the Tigers limited Ohio Wesleyan to two goals in the third quarter as RIT took a 17-8 lead into the fourth quarter. Gebhardt and Eistrat each scored for the Tigers in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers out-shot Ohio Wesleyan, 59-32. including 27-6 in the opening quarter. RIT won the ground ball battle, 38-19, and went 5-of-8 on the man-advantage. The Tigers went 18-of-20 on clearing attempts, won 22-of-30 face-offs and held the Battling Bishops to 2-of-4 on their man-up chances.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 versus Bates College. That game will be played on the campus of UMass-Amherst at 1 p.m.
