ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's tennis team (4-1) suffered its first loss of the 2018-19 season, dropping a close 5-4 decision to University of Rochester (1-0) on Saturday morning from the Goergen Athletic Center.
Rochester opened by winning two of three matches against RIT in doubles play. RIT's
Amelia Ying (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and
Shayna Ginster (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) rolled to an 8-3 win at second doubles over Yaya Wang and Cami Ruiz Vega. Rochester would respond with an 8-5 win at third doubles. At first doubles, Rochester's Camila Garcia and Abbey Reinhart outlasted
Anne Taylor (Beaver, PA/Beaver) and
Kristen Zablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) in a wild match, 8-7. Rochester would earned the eighth point by taking the tiebreaker, 7-4.
Rochester extended its lead to 4-1 as Reinhart and Garcia won at first and second singles. Zablonski recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bianca Dyer to make it 4-2. Rochester would get the fifth and decisive point, as Ruiz Vega rallied from dropping the first set to Ginster, 7-6 (7-2) before taking the next two by scores of 6-0, 6-4.
Kirsten Auble (Portland, OR/Sunset) would defeat Rina Chen at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-2, before
Claire Casalnova (Mars, PA/Pine Richland) earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over Wang at fifth singles to close into the gap.
RIT is back in action on Sunday, March 3 versus Liberty League rival Skidmore College from the Midtown Athletic Club. The match gets underway at 4:30 p.m.
