GENEVA, NY -- The No. 2 RIT (11-5-2) women's soccer team was beaten 1-0 by No. 3 Vassar College (10-7-1) in the Liberty League semifinal Saturday afternoon from Cozzens Field on the campus of William Smith College.
Shots were 19-6 in favor of RIT, including five on target for the Tigers. RIT had seven corner kicks to three for the Brewers.
Alyssa Salls (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) took the loss in net for RIT, making two saves. Savannah Cutler tallied the Vassar goal, and Fiona Walsh got the win in net, making five stops.
RIT had a chance in the 18th minute when
Abbey Saia (Monroe, CT/Masuk) made a run down the flank, getting free. She fired in a service that
Christine Cataldo-Smith (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) hit the first time, but was just wide of the Vassar net. The Brewers broke through with a goal in the 34th minute. Cutler scored on a low shot on a scrum in front of the RIT net.
Saia had a chance for RIT in the 56th minute when she found herself 1-v-1 with Walsh, but her shot was saved by the Vassar keeper.
With time winding down in regulation, the Tigers kept the pressure on the Vassar defense. Saia had a chance in the 82nd minute, but her shot rang off the post, and
Kayla Grossman (Sewell, NJ/Clearview Regional) had a shot from distance in the 87th minute that clanged off the cross-bar and away.
The Brewers advance to the Liberty League Championship where they will face the top-seeded Herons on Sunday afternoon.
