Women's Hockey rings in 2019 with 2-1 win at Brown

PROVIDENCE, RI – The RIT women's hockey team (6-10-4) started the new year off with a 2-1 win over Brown University (5-7-1 from Meehan Auditorium Friday night.

Ellie Larson (Hutchinson, MN/Hutchinson Tigers) and Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) both scored for the Tigers in the win. Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) had assists on both goals for the Tigers. Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) had a great start to the new year, making 27 saves in the win.

Sena Hanson scored the lone goal for the Bears while Calla Isaac took the lose in net making 23 saves.

RIT opened the scoring just seven minutes into the first period, as Larson took a feed from Gout and from the right point, fired a slap shot that deflected off a Brown defender and over the goaltender. With seconds left in the first period, Larson fired a desperation shot that went off the goalie's chest and right to Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe) in front, who fired it in, but was ruled no goal as the time had just expired.

In the second period, RIT extended its lead to 2-0, 7:16 in, as Gout won a battle for the puck up against the board to find Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) for the second goal of the game.

The Bears had a great chance with 3:57 left in the period, as Shay fed a pass to the Lizzy Gross who give it back for a wide-open shot, but Lanteigne smothered it.

Brown started the third period strong, scoring just five minutes into play. Hanson took the puck down the left-wing side to beat Lanteigne to get the Bears on the board. RIT would hold on from there for the win.

The Bears outshot the Tigers 28-25 but also had nine penalties to RIT's eight penalties.

"First games off the break can be challenging when trying to find a rhythm, we found a way to get the win,"said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach Chad Davis. "We are looking forward to tomorrow and want to be more consistent, Brown played us hard and we expect the same tomorrow."

The Tigers leads the all-time series between the two schools, 10-7-1, including a 7-2-0 mark at the Division I level.

RIT and Brown wrap up the two-game set from Meehan Auditorium Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
