Volleyball runs winning streak to 10 matches with victory over Wilkes

CORTLAND, NY – The RIT volleyball team (12-2) team ran its winning streak to 10 matches, defeating Wilkes University (12-5) in four sets on Friday evening from the Red Dragon Classic hosted by SUNY Cortland on Friday evening.

RIT won the first set, 25-13, before falling in set two, 25-20. The Tigers turned it on in sets three and four, winning by scores of 25-18 and 25-19.

The Tigers slammed 46 kills and hit .208. RIT recorded 10 service aces and 15.5 blocks.

Sophomore Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru) slammed 16 kills and added 10 digs, while senior Sara Taylor (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) added 12 kills and eight digs. Junior Kirstie Wehler (Saint Marys, PA/Elk County Catholic) enjoyed a tremendous match, leading the Tigers with 16 digs as well as eight kills and four blocks. Kelly Waters (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) had a season-high seven solo blocks.

Senior setter Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) dished out 36 assists and added four kills, while Paige Daly (Allison Park, PA/Hampton) had 10 digs.

"We had moments of competing at the level that is required to reach our potential as a team," said RIT head coach Jim Lodes. "I like that we continue to work on developing what it will take to consistently play at that level. This was another good win."

Jamey Mikovich led Wilkes with 15 digs, 10 kills and four blocks. Karlye Huffman added 25 assists.

Tonight's contest marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

RIT is right back in action on Saturday with a pair of matches at the Red Dragon Invitational. The Tigers take on host Cortland State at 11 a.m. and Morrisville State at 1:30 p.m. RIT is back home Tuesday night to face Medaille College.
