Women's hockey skates to 3-3 draw versus Ryerson in exhibition opener

Kendall Cornine scores lone goal in shootout for the Tigers

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team began the 2018-19 season by skating to a 3-3 tie against Ryerson University in an exhibition contest at the Gene Polisseni Center Sunday afternoon. Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) would score the lone goal in a three round post-game shootout for RIT.

Cornine and Jade Mancini (Burlington, Ontario/Bishop Tonnos) scored first period goals for the Tigers, while Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) added a third period goal that gave RIT a 3-1 lead. Natalie Pantaleo and Erik Course scored third period goals 33 seconds apart to tie the game for Ryerson, while Camryn Tait scored a first period goal.

The Tigers out-shot Ryerson, 28-19 and were 1-for-5 on the power-play, while holding Ryerson scoreless in six chances.

RIT goaltender Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) stopped 16 of 17 shots and made all three saves in the shootout. Fanny Vigeant made 18 saves on 20 shots over two periods for Ryerson, while Natalie Thompson played the third period and overtime, stopping seven shots.

"Today was a lot of fun," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Head Coach Chad Davis, who made his debut behind the bench for RIT. "I thought the team worked really hard and gave the fans an exciting game. We are excited to get a few players back (from injury) as we open the regular season next weekend."

Ryerson opened the scoring just 2:56 in, as Tait fired home a rebound after a shot by Erika Course ricocheted off a RIT defender's skate.

Cornine would even the game at 1-1 just 1:38 later, as she took a feed from Madison Farrand (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) in the neutral zone, skated in all alone and fired a wrist shot past Vigeant for the goal.

RIT would take the lead just 8:31 into the game, as Mancini deflected a point shot by Taylor Baker (Toronto, Ontario/North Toronto Collegiate Institute) past Vigeant. Abby Davies (Ashton, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators) won an offensive zone face-off back to Baker, whose hard shot was redirected in front.

RIT had several good chances to add to its lead in the second period, but Vigeant made a handful of key saves, including a key pad stop on Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs).

RIT's penalty-killing unit had to come up big in the second period, stopping four different power-play attempts by Ryerson.

Gout gave RIT a 3-1 lead 1:40 into the third period, firing in a loose puck in front on a 5-on-3 power-play, as a shot by Ellie Larson (Hutchinson, MN/Hutchinson Tigers) went off Cornine in front.

The Rams would rally with two goals in 33 seconds to tie the game at 3-3. Pantaleo fired in a shot from the slot right after power-play expired to make it 3-2 and Course scored from in front during a scramble during a delayed penalty on RIT to tie the game.

The two teams contested a three-round shootout after overtime. Lanteigne stopped all three Ryerson attempts, while Cornine scored on a backhand on RIT's final attempt to end the shootout.

It was the second meeting in as many seasons between the two schools. Last year, RIT defeated Ryerson, 6-5.

RIT opens the regular season on Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29 with a pair of home games against Holy Cross. Friday's contest starts at 6 p.m., while Saturday's game begins at 1 p.m.
