ROCHESTER, NY – Senior
Dalton Murray (Savannah, NY/Clyde-Savannah) launched a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the RIT baseball team (16-13-1) to an 8-5 win over No. 27 St. John Fisher College (25-12) from Tiger Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Murray, who did not start the game because he was completing a final exam, entered as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning and singled in
Luke McNamara (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) to give RIT a 2-1 lead. With RIT trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Murray came up with the bases loaded and launched a 2-2 fastball over the fence in left center field for his third home run of the season and first grand-slam, giving RIT a 7-4 lead. RIT would add one more run in the seventh and hold on for the key non-conference win.
It was RIT's first win over a nationally-ranked program this season.
Murray went 2-for-5 with a career-best five RBIs. Freshman catcher
Luke McNamara (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) made his first collegiate start and recorded his first hit, walked twice and scored three times.
Patrick Mylott (Aurora, OH/Western Reserve Academy),
Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and
Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) added RBIs for the Tigers.
Ben Clough (Tolland, CT/Tolland) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched five solid innings, allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out four batters.
Michael Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) pitched the sixth and seventh innings and allowed a pair of earned runs, but picked up the win in relief.
Nick Claver (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) finished off the Cardinals, allowing two hits and a run, while striking out two batters over the final two innings.
Allen Murphy was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored for the Cardinals. Tim Geissel gave up three runs on five hits over five innings. Jack Delany took the loss in relief.
The Cardinals lead the all-time series between the two schools, 46-32. St. John Fisher won the previous meeting earlier in the season over RIT, 3-0. Alex Teska allowed just four hits in 7 1/3 shutout innings for the Cardinals.
The Tigers wrap up the 2018 regular season with four crucial Liberty League contests against current leader Rochester this weekend. The Tigers and Yellowjackets meet up at Towers Field on the campus of Rochester for a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and play two at Tiger Stadium Sunday, also at noon. RIT will honor the Class of 2018 before Sunday's doubleheader.
