Softball suffers two tough losses to Liberty League rival Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (7-19, 3-9 Liberty League) dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Genesee River rival University of Rochester (15-14, 8-4 Liberty League) from Tiger Stadium Friday afternoon. Rochester won game one, 3-1 and took game two, 8-4 in 10 innings.

In game one, Rochester would score single runs in the second, third and fifth innings to hold a 3-0 lead. RIT would get one back in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva) launched a solo home run to centerfield, her second of the season. That would be as close as the Tigers would get, as Rochester would close out the win.

Alexis Pope had two hits for Rochester in game one, while Gianna Melillo and Elizabeth Bourne each drove in a run. Bourne was strong on the mound for Rochester, allowing just three hits and a run in the complete game effort with four strikeouts for her sixth win of the season.

Melissa Gould (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) took the loss for RIT, allowing four hits and two runs over 2 1/3 innings. Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) came on in relief and allowed just three hits and a run with four strikeouts over the final 4 2/3 innings.

Game two began as a fierce pitcher's duel between RIT's Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) and Rochester's Hannah Leahy, who matched zeroes over the first five innings. Rochester opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the sixth inning before RIT responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

With the bases loaded and one out, Madisen Baldwin (Washougal, WA/Washougal) lined a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Danielle Hotz (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) to cut the lead to 2-1. Raquel Estrada (Middletown, NY/Middletown) would single up the middle, driving in Olivia Doret (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) to tie the game at 2-2. Nicole O'Donnell (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) would reach on an error, allowing Guinan to score, giving RIT the lead.

Rochester would respond in the top of the seventh, as Jocelyn Blackshear led off with a double and scored on a single by Michela Farmer to tie the game.

RIT would threaten in the bottom of the ninth inning, getting runners on first and second with one out. After a strikeout, Rochester would intentionally walk Guinan to set up bases loaded with two outs. Leahy would get out of the jam to keep the game tied.

In the top of the 10th inning, Rochester broke through with five runs. Lauren Petricca singled with the bases loaded and one out, driving in two runs to make it a 5-3 game. The next batter, Melillo, crushed a three-run home run to left field to give Rochester an 8-3 lead.

Marissa Russo, Melillo and Farmer had two hits apiece for Rochester. Leahy scattered six hits and a pair of earned runs, throwing all 10 innings.

O'Donnell had two hits for the Tigers. Mahar struck out a season-high nine batters, while throwing all 10 innings.

The Tigers wrap Liberty League play on Saturday with a pair of games at Ithaca College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m.
