PITTSFORD, NY – The RIT softball team (5-13) split a non-league doubleheader at Nazareth College (7-11) on Wednesday afternoon from Flyer Field. RIT took game one, 1-0, while Nazareth won game two, 3-2.
The Tigers scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning and that proved to be the difference, as
Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) would keep the Golden Flyers off balance all afternoon. She scattered six hits and struck out one batter for her first shutout and third win of the season.
Danielle Hotz (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) led off the game with a single and with one out,
Olivia Doret (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) singled Hotz to second. After a force out on a ground ball,
Alexandria Lunderman (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) hit a ball to the right side that was mishandled, allowing Doret to score.
Nazareth hurler Gabriella Corasaniti took the loss despite only allowing four hits, while striking out six batters in the complete-game effort. The Golden Flyers left 12 runners on base, including bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings.
In game two, the Golden Flyers raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning before RIT battled back with single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.
Raquel Estrada (Middletown, NY/Middletown) was 2-for-3, driving in both RIT runs. She doubled in
Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva), who reached on a double in the fourth inning to make it 3-1 and singled in
Samm Carroll (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge), who led off the sixth inning with a single.
Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) pitched four innings of shutout relief, allowing just four hits, while striking out three batters.
Melissa Gould (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) took the loss, allowing five hits and three runs in two innings.
Marissa Tortora was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for the Golden Flyers. Kylie Smith improved to 3-3 on the mound, allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) in 5 2/3 innings. Corasaniti came on and got the final four outs for the save, her first of the season.
The Tigers are back in action Saturday with a pair of home games against Union College that get underway at 1 p.m.
