ITHACA, NY -- The No. 1 RIT (13-0, 5-0 Liberty League) men's lacrosse team defeated No. 15 Ithaca College (10-2, 4-2 Liberty League) 19-9 in Liberty League action Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers outscored Ithaca 8-1 in the third quarter to pull away and break the game open.
RIT led 3-0 after one quarter and used a five-goal run in the second to lead 9-3 at the half. RIT used a dominating third quarter to push the lead 17-4 en route to the win.
RIT held a 48-43 edge in shots and won the ground ball battle, 43-34. The Tigers won 17-of-31 face-offs and cleared the ball successfully 21-of-25 times. RIT's defense caused 10 turnovers in the victory and the top-ranked man-up unit was 2-for-3.
Kyle Killen (Peterborough, Ontario/Crestwood Secondary) continued his torrid scoring pace, scoring six goals, including two man-up tallies. Killen, who recorded his 100th career point at the university last week, now has 47 goals in 2018 to lead the Tigers.
Matt Pogue (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Paul Secondary) recorded his first collegiate hat-trick to go along with four ground balls, while
Zach Ursu (Mono, Ontario/The Kiski School), Cam Issac and
Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School) scored two goals apiece.
Brendan MacDonald (Georgetown, Ontario/Trinity-Pawling),
Beau Riley (Homer, NY/Homer) and
Shawn Nally (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) had a goal and an assist apiece, while
Ryan Tandy (Montrose, NY/Hendrick-Hudson) dished out two helpers.
Connor Pupp (Calgary, Alberta/Lord Beaverbrook) also added a fourth quarter goal for RIT.
Nate Farrell (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) won 10-of-17 face-offs and had five ground balls, while
Jimmy Spillane (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) added seven wins at the "X" with four ground balls.
Trevor Smyth (Orangeville, Ontario/The Kiski School) caused four turnovers.
Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) was strong in net, stopping 11 shots in three quarters of play before giving way to
Holden McDonald (Toronto, Ontatrio/St. Mary Catholic) in the fourth quarter. McDonald finished with four saves.
Connor Brumfield (2-1-3) and Jake Cotton (1-2-3) led the Bombers with three points apiece, while Sean Seaberg grabbed eight ground balls. Robby Atwood made 12 saves in net.
Nally gave RIT a 1-0 lead on his goal at the 11:01 mark of the opening quarter. Commandant gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead on his transition goal off an assist from
Eli Salama (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best) with 5:57 remaining in the opening quarter, while Pogue made it 3-0 lead late in the quarter. He forced a turnover, got the loose ball and fired a shot past Atwood to give the Tigers a three-goal cushion after 15 minutes of play.
Ithaca got on the board with a man-up goal at 12:49 of the second quarter. Will Witter scored off an assist from Cotton early in the quarter to make it a two-goal game. Killen answered right back for RIT, scoring off an assist from
Aidan Milburn (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary) off the ensuing face-off to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.
Brumfield scored on a drive with 10:15 remaining in the first half to make it 4-2 Tigers. The Tigers went in a run, scoring five straight goals to take a 9-2 lead late in the half. Ursu took a feed from MacDonald and scored from in close to make it 5-2 Tigers. Pogue scored his second of the game with 8:41 to play in the quarter giving RIT a 6-2 lead. Ursu scored his second of the game, a rare man-down goal, with 6:48 remaining off an assist from
Ben Tackett (Butler, PA/The Kiski School). Isaac made it 8-2 RIT on his goal with 5:55 to play in the quarter. Ozsvath broke the RIT run, scoring for the Bombers with 57 seconds remaining in the half to cut the RIT lead to 9-3.
RIT scored the first three goals of the third quarter, and outscored the Bombers 8-1 overall in the frame to lead 17-4 after 45 minutes. The Tigers took a 12-3 lead on Isaac's second of the game with 12:57 remaining in the quarter. Killen and Commandant also scored for the Tigers, while Kaelan Fitzpatrick broke the Tigers run with his goal at the 11:31 mark of the quarter to cut the RIT lead to 12-4.
The Tigers ran off five straight goals to close out the quarter strong. Killen third goal of the quarter gave the Tigers a 15-4 lead. MacDonald and Pogue scored late to give the Tigers a 13-goal edge heading into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers scored at least 17 goals for the eighth straight game. Ithaca leads the all-time series between the two schools, 28-26. Today's game marked the first meeting as Liberty League rivals, as Ithaca is in its first year as a member of the conference after playing in the Liberty League.
RIT is right back in action, as they take on Skidmore College at 12 p.m. on RIT's Turf Field. Saturday marks the 50-year celebration of RIT lacrosse, as several former alumni will be on hand. The Tigers will also honor the class of 2018 prior to face-off.
