ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 1 RIT men's lacrosse team (7-0) led 7-1 after the first quarter and 15-1 at halftime en route to a 21-5 win over SUNY Geneseo (2-3) in non-league action from RIT's Turf Field Wednesday afternoon. RIT scored 21 goals for the second consecutive game.
Shots were 40-27 in favor of RIT. The Tigers won the ground ball battle, 38-27 and went 17-of-20 on clearing attempts. RIT won 18-of-28 face-offs and caused six turnovers.
Kyle Killen (Peterborough, Ontario/Crestwood Secondary) led RIT with nine points on seven goals and two assists, all in the opening half.
Dawson Tait (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa) tallied two goals and two assists,, while
Luke Smeltzer (Halifax, NS/The Gunnery) and
Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School) each tallied two goals.
Andrew Doktor (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) and
Matt Wiechers (Waterloo, Ontario/The Kiski School) each scored their first collegiate goals.
Jimmy Spillane (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) won 13-of-16 face-offs and had three ground balls.
Ben Tackett (Butler, PA/The Kiski School) led the Tigers with four ground balls.
Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) got the win in net, making six saves.
Holden McDonald (Toronto, Ontatrio/St. Mary Catholic) made three saves, while
John Kuzmeski (Hadley, MA/Suffield Academy) made a save, and
Drew Hutchison (Otonabee, Ontario/The Hill Academy) made two stops.
Luke Jordon scored two goals for the Knights, while Connor Griffin had two assists. Michael Yehl took the loss in net for the Knights.
RIT scored the first four goals of the game, and led 7-1 after the first quarter. Killen and Commandant each scored two of RIT's seven first quarter goals, and
Eli Salama (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best) scored one in transition. Killen scored the first five goals of the second quarter, giving him seven for the half, while
Beau Riley (Homer, NY/Homer),
Aidan Milburn (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary),
Shawn Nally (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) and Tait each scored in an 8-0 quarter for the Tigers.
Smeltzer scored two goals in the third quarter, with Tait and Doktor each getting on the scoresheet. Doktor scored his first collegiate goal with 3:35 remaining in the third quarter off an assist from Tait.
Adam Wolf (Oakville, Ontario/Everest Academy) and Wiechers each scored in the fourth quarter for RIT to make it a 21-5 final.
Killen now has 26 goals in seven games this season. Eight different Tigers are averaging a goal per game in 2018.
RIT returns to Liberty League action this weekend when the Tigers face Vassar College at 1 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
