ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (4-27-3, 1-19-0 CHA) wrapped up the 2017-18 regular season by falling to Mercyhurst University (16-14-4, 13-4-3 CHA) 3-0 on Saturday afternoon from the Gene Polisseni Center. Before the game, RIT honored seniors
Lauren Carroll (Carlisle, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) and
Darcy Henderson (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas), who played in their final home game.
Maggie Knott had a goal and an assist to lead the Lakers, while Summer-Rae Dobson and Brooke Hartwick also scored. In goal, Kennedy Blair picked up her second consecutive shutout, stopping 19 shots.
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) led the Tigers with eight shots on goal. Goaltender
Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) made a season-high 43 saves on 46 shots.
Mercyhurst out-shot RIT, 46-19. The Lakers were 0-for-7 with the man-advantage, while RIT was 0-for-6.
"I thought we played pretty well as a whole during the entire weekend against a very good Mercyhurst team," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach
Scott McDonald. "The penalty kill was good and Jenna (de Jonge) made some big saves for us."
The Lakers opened the scoring with 4:17 left in the opening period, as Knott took a pass from Michelle Robillard on the rush and slipped a backhander between the legs of de Jonge for her 12th goal of the season.
deJonge made a great save early on Alexa Vasko with the blocker from right in front. RIT had a golden chance on a 2-on-0, while shorthanded, but
Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) fired a shot from in close over the net.
The Lakers added to their lead just 1:30 into the period, as Dobson flipped a shot over de Jonge after taking a feed from Vilma Tanskanen for her ninth goal of the season.
de Jonge had to make a huge save on Tanskanen later in the period on a breakaway to keep it a 2-0 game.
Hartwick scored her 13th goal of the season 2:20 into the third period to make it 3-0 Lakers.
RIT had a long 5-on-3 moments later and fired six shots, but could not get one past Blair. The Mercyhurst goaltender made a big stop on Cornine from in close. Later on, Blair robbed
Brooke Baker (Saline, MI/Saline) on a shorthanded breakaway attempt to preserve the shutout.
RIT will compete in the 2018 College Hockey America Championship Tournament, starting Thursday, March 1. The Tigers will take on No. 3 seed Syracuse University in the opening round game at 2 p.m. from HARBORCENTER in downtown Buffalo.
