Women's hockey loses at home to Syracuse

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (4-23-3, 1-15-0 CHA) women's hockey team was defeated 6-0 by Syracuse University (11-17-2, 10-5-1 CHA) on Saturday afternoon in College Hockey America action from the Gene Polisseni Center.

Shots were 42-38 in favor of the Orange. The Tigers went 0-for-5 with the man advantage, while Syracuse went 1-for-4 on the power play. The Tigers took six penalties for 12 minutes, while the Orange took seven penalties for 14 minutes.

Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) took the loss in net for RIT, making 36 saves. Savannah Rennie led Syracuse with two goals. Emma Polaski tallied a goal and an assist, while Lindsay Eastwood dished out a pair of assists. Edith D'Astous Moreau picked up the win in net for the Orange, making 38 saves.

The Tigers trailed 1-0 after the first period, despite outshooting the Orange 17-16. Klimek gave Syracuse the lead on her eighth goal of the season at 5:55 of the period off an assist from Kristen Siermachesky. Cornine fired five shots on net in the period for RIT, while de Jonge made 15 saves in net for the Tigers.

Syracuse tacked on five goals in the second period to lead 6-0 after 40 minutes of action. The Tiges fired 11 shots in the period. Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) had the Tigers best chance early in the period. With RIT on the power play, Rushton found herself alone in front. She fired a shot, but D'Astous-Moreau made the save.

Rennie scored twice in the period for Syracuse, while Burriss, Curtis and Polaski also scored.

Neither team scored in the third period, despite combining to fire 23 shots on net. Rushton and Cornine had decent chances in the third with shots from close-range. As in the second period, D'Astous Moreau came up with the saves.

RIT returns to action on Friday, Feb. 16 when the Tigers face Penn State University in University Park, Pa.
