Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Joe Venniro - Executive Director of Athletic Communications

Women's hockey uses strong penalty-killing to earn 1-1 tie vs. Union

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (1-2-2) battled Union College (1-5-1) to a 1-1 draw Friday evening from the Gene Polisseni Center. RIT celebrated Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend.

RIT's penalty-killing unit was outstanding in helping preserve the tie. The Tigers had to kill off 1:56 on a 5-on-3 Union power-play to start overtime, then another two minute 5-on-4 later in the extra session. RIT blocked six Union shots on the three overtime power-plays, including three by Madison Itagaki (Glenview, IL/Chicago Mission). RIT blocked 31 shots on the evening, including six from Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep).

With just 10 seconds left in overtime, Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) nearly won it for RIT, ringing a backhand off the inside of the right post and out. The play was reviewed after time ran out but was determined that the puck did not cross the line.

Cornine scored RIT's lone goal, a second period marker. Goaltender Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) was excellent in net, stopping 29 of 30 Union shots.

Haley Shugart scored for Union in the second period and goaltender Amelia Murray made 37 saves.

RIT out-shot Union, 38-30. RIT held the Dutchwomen scoreless in 10 power-play attempts, while RIT was 0-for-5.

"I really liked how we battled all night, especially killing off the 5-on-3 in overtime," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach Chad Davis. "We want to come out strong and continue with that intensity tomorrow."

Neither team scored in rapidly played first period that took just 23 minutes of real time to play with only eight total whistles.

Brooke Baker (Saline, MI/Saline) had a shot from the face-off circle go through Murray and just wide of the net. Later in the period, Tori Haywood (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic) came in on a 2-on-1 rush, danced around a defenseman and lost control of the puck just before getting to the net, as Murray covered it up.

Lanteigne had to make a key pad save on Angelica Melone on a 2-on-1 rush late in the period to keep the game scoreless.

Union would score first, 5:28 into the second period, as Shugart took a cross-ice feed from Grace Heiting and snapped a hard wrist over a sliding Lanteigne for her fourth goal of the season.

That goal seemed to get RIT going however, as they controlled play for the rest of the period and were rewarded with five minutes left, as Cornine swept in a loose puck after a shot by Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) in the slot was blocked. Cornine buried a backhander past Murray for her fifth goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1.

In the third period, RIT had several chances, out-shooting Union, 17-8, but could not get the key goal. Gout hit the left post late in regulation on a hard shot from the high slot. Rushton had two good chances waffled aside by Murray.

RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 10-5-3.

RIT and Union wrap up the weekend series on Saturday at noon from the Gene Polisseni Center.
