Softball suffers 4-0 loss to Clarkson in 2017 Liberty League Tournament opener

Tigers will take on Skidmore Friday at 12:30 p.m. in an elimination game

TROY, NY – The No. 2 seeded RIT softball team (21-15) dropped its opening round game of the double elimination Liberty League Tournament, 4-0 to No. 3 Clarkson University (21-16) at Robison Field on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Thursday afternoon.

With the loss, RIT will now take on No. 4 seed Skidmore College (19-22) in an elimination game on Friday that is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Skidmore fell to top seed Rensselaer (23-12), 5-2 in an opening round contest earlier today. Clarkson and Rensselaer will play in the winner's bracket game on Friday morning at 10 a.m.

RIT's bats were kept in check by Clarkson pitcher Jamie Bridge, who was dominant on the mound, allowing just one hit, a two-out single by Oilvia Doret in the second inning. Bridge struck out nine RIT hitters, got 11 outs by fly out and one ground out for her 12th win of the season.

The Golden Knights scored three runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth, as they had 10 hits on the day.

With one out in the third inning, Bridget Wooley, Reanna Dunn, and Summer Lancette hit consecutive singles to load the bases. After Bridge popped up, RIT starter Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) was one out away from getting through the inning unscathed before Michele Winn ripped a double to left center field, clearing the bases and giving the Golden Knights a 3-0 lead.

Clarkson would add to its lead in the fourth inning, as singles by Kyrstin Messier and Wooley put runners on first and third with two outs. Once again, the Golden Knights were able to get a big two-out hit, as Dunn reached on an infield single, scoring Messier for a 4-0 edge.

Valentine would take the loss on the mound, allowing eight and four runs, all earned, while striking out four batters in four innings, falling to 9-7 on the year. Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) would fire three scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and a walk, while striking out one batter.

The two teams had split a pair of regular season contests at Clarkson earlier in the season.

RIT won both earlier season contests against tomorrow's opponent, Skidmore, by scores of 3-0 and 8-1 on April 8.
