No. 5 men's lacrosse uses dominant run to earn key Liberty League win at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY – The No. 5 RIT (10-2, 4-1 Liberty League) men's lacrosse outscored Union (6-5, 2-3 Liberty League) 13-2 over the second and third quarters to earn a 15-8 win over the Dutchmen in Liberty League action from Frank Bailey Field on Saturday afternoon. The win moves RIT into a tie for first place in the Liberty League standings with St. Lawrence.

RIT trailed 4-1 after the first quarter, but outscored Union 7-1 in the second quarter and 6-1 in the third to pull away. Kyle Killen (Peterborough, ON/Crestwood Secondary ) led a balanced Tigers attack with three goals. JD Hall (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe) and Ben Tackett (Butler, PA/The Kiski School) each scored three goals, while Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/Huron Heights Secondary), Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) and Dave Shuster (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep) each scored a goal and added an assist. Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy), RIT's all-time leading scorer, dished out three assists.

Nick Nesbitt (Burlington, Ontario/Salisbuury School) got the win in net, making eight saves. Jon Berg (Chester, NJ/Mendham) played the fourth quarter and made six saves. Jimmy Spillane (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) won 16-of-24 face-offs, while Aidan Milburn (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary), and Patrick Hannigan (Hanover, MA/Hanover) each caused two turnovers.

Peter Richardson and Josh Willis each scored two goals for the Dutchmen, while Daniel Kycia handed out a pair of assists. Jack Santilli took the loss in net for the Dutchmen, making 15 saves.

Union looked to be in control after the first quarter, leading RIT 4-1. Richardson scored twice in the quarter, while John Edmonds and Willis each scored. Tied 1-1 late in the quarter, Union scored three straight to take a three-goal lead. Tackett scored RIT's lone goal in the quarter.

RIT's offense came to life in the second quarter, scoring the first six goals. Killen, Shuster, Jay Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport), Levick, Tackett, Zach Ursu (Mono, ON/The Kiski School) and Hall all scored in the quarter. Kerry Lyne scored Union's lone goal with his tally at the 5:32 mark. Hall scored late in the quarter to give the Tigers a 8-5 lead at the half.

The Tigers scored the first six goals of the third quarter, taking a 14-5 lead on Killen's man-up goal off an assist from Lee with 5:59 to play. Killen scored twice in the quarter, while Hall, Wallace, Cam Isaac (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and Brendan MacDonald (Georgetown, ON/Trinity-Pawling) also tallied for RIT. Willis broke the RIT run with his goal with 1:18 to play in the quarter that cut the deficit to 14-6.

RIT cruised to the win with just one goal in the fourth quarter. Jon Sickler (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) tallied his first collegiate goal off an assist from Shuster with 9:18 to play to extend the RIT lead to 15-6. Jack Sullivan and David Husband each scored for Union to complete the scoring.

Shots were 47-35 in favor of RIT, who held a slight 26-23 ground ball edge. The Tigers won 19-of-27 face-offs and went 20-of-21 on clearing attempts. RIT was 2-for-3 on man-up, while holding Union scoreless on five man-up chances.

RIT has now won 13 straight contests over Union.

The Tigers return to action On Tuesday, April 18 when they face No. 10 Ithaca College at 4 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y. The Bombers beat RIT 18-16 last season at Tiger Stadium.
