OWINGS MILLS, MD — The No. 2 RIT (5-1) men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, losing 10-9 in overtime to No. 11 Dickinson College (5-1) at the Mustang Classic hosted by Stevenson University. Dylan Maher scored for the Red Devils at 3:24 of the overtime to hand the Tigers its first loss of the season.
Shots were 43-33 in favor of Dickinson. RIT had 34 ground balls, and won 10-of-21 face-offs. The Tigers were 17-of-20 on clears and scored on their lone man-up chance.
Beau Riley (Homer, NY/Homer),
Kyle Killen (Peterborough, ON/Crestwood Secondary High School) and
Dave Shuster (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep) each scored two goals for the Tigers.
Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) added a goal and two assists, while
JD Hall (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe) and
Cam Isaac (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) each scored.
Ben Tackett (Butler, PA/The Kiski School) grabbed six ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Nick Nesbitt (Burlington, Ontario/Salisbuury School) took the loss in net, making nine saves.
Maher led Dickinson with four goals, including the game-winner in overtime. Tucker Carney had a goal and two assists, and Brodie Phillips scored a goal and added an assist. Andrew Jones got the win in net for the Red Devils, making 10 saves.
Wallace, Shuster and
Beau Riley (Homer, NY/Homer) each scored for RIT in the first quarter. Wallace gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead on his goal early in the quarter. After a Dickinson goal tied it, Shuster scooped a loose ball in front of the Dickinson net and score to give RIT a 2-1 lead. After another Red Devil goal tied the score, Riley scored off an assist from
Ben Tackett (Butler, PA/The Kiski School) to make it 3-2 Tigers. Nick Goles scored with 43 seconds to play that tied the score at 3-3.
The Tigers opened the second quarter on a roll, tallying the first three goals. Killen scored the first two goals of the quarter to give RIT a 5-3 lead. Shuster's second goal of the game with 9:58 to play in the half gave RIT its largest lead of the game at 6-3.
Dickinson closed out the quarter strong. Maher scored twice, while Steve Ganelin tied the game at 6-6 on his goal with 4:55 to play. Shots were 30-13 in favor of Dickinson in the first half. Shuster and Killen each had two goals for RIT, while
Nick Nesbitt (Burlington, Ontario/Salisbuury School) made five saves.
It took a while for either team to score in the third quarter. Isaac gave RIT a 7-6 lead with his unassisted goal at the 5:40 mark of the quarter. After a Tucker Carney goal tied it, Riley scored with 1.9 seconds to play in the quarter to five RIT a slim lead. He drove around his defender and to the front of the net, scoring from in close.
Lockwood tied the game at 8-8 early in the fourth quarter on his goal off an assist from Phillips at 11:51. J.D. Hall took a feed from
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) and scored, giving RIT a 9-8 lead with 11:10 to play. Maher tied the score at 9-9 with his goal with 4:12 to play.
Tied 9-9 with under a minute to play, Wallace had a great look and fired a low shot that Jones was able to save. The Tigers scooped up the loose ball and called timeout, but turned the ball over late to send the game into overtime.
Dickinson won the opening face-off of the overtime session and called timeout. After the timeout the Red Devils worked the ball around finally coming to Maher. He drove to his left and fired a shot from 12-yards out that beat Nesbitt to give Dickinson the win.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, March 25 at 3 p.m. when the Tigers face Clarkson University in Liberty League action from Potsdam, N.Y.
