Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Alex Busch - Assistant Sports Information Director

Women's hockey loses 2-0 on the road at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (6-24-2, 4-12-2 College Hockey America) fell 2-0 in the fourth and final regular season matchup with Syracuse (13-12-5, 12-4-2 CHA) Saturday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion.

Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made 32 saves in the game, while Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) fired four shots on goal. For Syracuse, Jessica Sibley and Stephanie Grossi scored, while Heather Schwarz and Megan Quinn added assists. Abbey Miller stopped all eight shots sent her way.

Syracuse got on the board first, 7:01 into the game. Sibley put a backhand shot behind Lanteigne for her 10th goal of the season, after the puck was turned over by the Tigers on a breakout. RIT had two power-play opportunities in the period, but was unable to convert.

Syracuse would score again in the third period, as Grossi stole the puck and put the Orange up 2-0 as she slid the puck by Lanteigne. Cornine had a chance to cut into the deficit later in the third, as she was sent on a breakaway, but was taken down and wasn't able to get a shot off.

The Orange out-shot the Tigers 34-8 in the game, and both teams were 0-for-6 on the power-play.

Syracuse leads the all-time series between the two schools, 13-7-2. Thirteen of the 22 meetings have either ended in ties or a one-goal difference, with seven going to overtime. The two teams skated to a 2-2 tie on Dec. 2 and Syracuse earned a 3-0 win on Dec. 3. Cornine scored both RIT goals in the 2-2 tie on Dec. 2, while Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) made 32 saves. Yesterday, Syracuse defeated RIT 5-2 at the Gene Polisseni Center. Cornine and Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area) scored for RIT.

The Tigers return home next weekend for the last time this season, for a two-game series against Mercyhurst. The Tigers and Lakers will face off at 6:05 p.m. on Friday and 2:05 p.m. Saturday. Saturday's contest will serve as senior day, as RIT will honor its six seniors in their final game at the Gene Polisseni Center.
