GENEVA, NY -- The No. 3 seed RIT (11-4-3) women's soccer fell to No. 2 Vassar College (10-5-3) by a score 1-0 in the Liberty League Tournament semifinals Saturday evening from William Smith College. Vassar advances to play top-seed William Smith in Sunday's title game. RIT will await a possible at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) was an All-Tournament Team selection
Amanda McFarland scored the lone goal in the 64th minute for Vassar. Shots were 8-7 in favor of the Brewers. The Tigers took seven corner kicks to five for the Brewers.
Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) took the loss in net for RIT, making one save. Fiona Walsh got the win for Vassar, making four saves.
RIT had a good chance early on, when
Piper Zimmerman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) drove into the Vassar penalty area. She fired a shot from 15 yards out that Walsh got to.
Elena Wolfe (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) had two chances from distance. Her first with a little under 25 minutes to play was saved by Walsh. Her shot with 18 minutes to play was headed for the left side, but Walsh got over to make the diving save.
RIT controlled play early in the second half, generating several good chances.
Marla Roberts (Penfield, NY/Home Schooled) and Monqiue Polanco had early chances for the Tigers.
Vassar took a lead in the 64th minute when Ally Thayer sent in a ball into the RIT penalty area. McFarland took a touch and fired into the low left corner to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.
Sami Alur (Fremont, CA/Irvington) sent a service into the Vassar penalty area that the Brewers defense turned aside for the corner kick. On the ensuing corner, the Tigers got the ball around, but did not get a shot away.
Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) had a great chance in front of the Vassar goal with 5:28 to play. She fired a shot from 8 yards out that Emma Lavelle blocked away to keep the one-goal lead. Alur had a shot blocked off a corner kick with 1:30 to play in regulation.
Elena Wolfe (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) had shot from in close inside the final minute. The shot was headed for the corner when Jordan Moss blocked the shot off the line and away.
