Simone's late goal lifts men's soccer to 2-2 tie at St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY – The RIT men's soccer team (3-5-2, 1-2-1 Liberty League) played to a 2-2 draw at Liberty League rival St. Lawrence University (5-4-3, 3-0-2 Liberty League) Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field. Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored with three minutes left in regulation to help RIT gain the tie.

Both teams attempted 11 shots, while St. Lawrence held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. The Tigers took three corner kicks, while the Saints had four. Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) earned the tie in net for RIT in net with four stops, Mike Smith was in net for St. Lawrence and finished with three saves.

St. Lawrence got off to a quick start with a goal from Jethro Dede off a pass from Ryan Roche in the eighth minute to open the scoring.

The Tigers would attempt a free kick in the 18th minute that found its way in to the box, in attempt to tie the game. Unfortunately it ended up getting kicked out by a Saint defender. However the Tigers did not let up, as moments later, Anthony Defeo scored a goal off a pass from Dean Kouroupas (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) to tie the game at 1-1.

In the 58th minute RIT committed a foul in the box, leading to a St. Lawrence penalty kick. Rob Brandell took the shot for the Saints but Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) made the save before it bounced off the crossbar to keep it tied.

Two minutes later Brandell would score on a header off an assist from Tapshak Augusine to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Saints.

With less than three minutes remaining in the contest Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton) received a pass from Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and scored from inside the box to tie it 2-2, sending the game into overtime.

The teams clamped down defensively in overtime, as neither squad could generate much offensively.

RIT returns to action on Friday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium against Rensselaer for Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend.
