Three first-half goals propel women's soccer to win over Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (9-3-2) women's soccer team scored three first-half goals en route to a 3-1 win over University of Rochester (6-7-1) in non-league action from Tiger Stadium Thursday afternoon. Junior Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) scored her first two goals of the season to pace the Tigers offensively.

Shots were 16-5 in favor of RIT. The Tigers took six corner kicks to five for the Yellowjackets. Thiel finished with a career-high two goals, while Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) also scored. Thiel and Jessica Jones (Holden, MA/Wachusett) each had an assist, and Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) got the win in net, making one save for RIT. Annie McEachron scored for Rochester, while Emma Campbell took the loss in net, making five saves.

RIT got on the scoreboard early, tallying in the fifth minute. Thiel scored into the top corner off a pass from White. Jones started the play with a ball to White who sent a pass to to Thiel first-time. Thiel gathered and fired for her first of the season.

Thiel gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead on her second of the game in the 12th minute. This time she intercepted a ball and dribbled around several Rochester defenders. She dribbled passed Campbell and scored into the open net to give the Tigers a two-goal advantage. Polanco made it 3-0 RIT when she scored off a rebound on a shot from Thiel in the 25th minute.

Rochester got one back on a goal from McEachron in the 45th minute. Makena Dougherty headed a pass over to McEachron who headed a shot into the corner to cut the RIT lead to 3-1 at halftime.

Piper Zimmerman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) and White each had a chance in the second half. Zimmerman's shot to the near-post was saved by Campbell, and White's shot rang off the post.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 21 when the Tigers face Bard College at 1 p.m. in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
