ROCHESTER, NY – Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach
Scott McDonald won his 200th game at the university, as the RIT women's hockey team, as the Tigers (6-20-2, 4-8-2 College Hockey America) earned its second straight shutout victory, 1-0 over visiting Lindenwood (5-18-2, 3-10-1 College Hockey America) at the Gene Polisseni Center.
Sophomore defenseman
Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area) broke a scoreless tie, converting a rebound off a shot from
Mackenzie Stone (Kars, Ontario/South Carleton) for a power-play goal with 9:41 left in regulation.
Brinna Dochniak (Marine on St. Croix, MN/Stillwater) also assisted on the goal, Rust's second of the season. The goal capped off a four-point weekend for Rust.
From there, Lindenwood pressured the Tigers, pulling goaltender Jolene deBruyn with 1:29 left in regulation. The Lady Lions had a few chances, but RIT goaltender
Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) was brilliant, keeping Lindenwood at bay to record her second consecutive shutout.
de Jonge stopped all 26 shots she faced for her second career shutout. She made 11 saves in the opening period, seven in the second, and eight in the third. de Jonge's perfect weekend lowered her goals against average to 2.58 and raised her save percentage to .919.
"I was just really happy to get the win," said McDonald. "I thought the girls came out in the third period and just wanted it more. Jenna (deJonge) was the difference for us, with big saves, especially over the first two periods, as we weren't as crisp as we were yesterday."
McDonald is now 200-118-26 in 11 seasons at RIT. He led RIT to the 2012 NCAA Division III Championship and College Hockey America titles in 2014 and 2015 at the Division I level.
"I have been able to do something I love for a long period of time," said McDonald on his 200th win at RIT. "I've had a group of girls throughout the years who have been willing to listen, work hard, and do whatever it takes to get the job done."
Both teams fired 26 shots on goal. RIT was 1-for-3 on the power-play, while Lindenwood were 0-for-2.
Cierra Paisley led the Lady Lions with seven shots on goal. deBruyn made 25 saves on 26 shots. Neither team scored in the opening period, as both squads fired 11 shots on goal.
RIT's two best chances of the period came while shorthanded.
Mackenzie Stone (Kars, Ontario/South Carleton) had a golden chance as a rebound came to her late in the period after a chance by
Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area) was stopped. Stone's shot from the slot was also denied by deBruyn. In the final seconds of the period, Wallace stepped around a defender and was tripped, firing a shot just wide of the net, but drew a penalty.
The game stayed scoreless after 40 minutes, with the shots tied, 18-18. Both teams did a good job limiting quality chances over the middle stanza. de Jonge made a great save on a point blank chance by Sarah Bobrowski late in the period off a face-off.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 9-6-5. Today's contest was the fourth and final regular season meeting between the two schools this season, with RIT holding a 3-1 edge. The two teams split a pair of games earlier in the season at Lindenwood, with the Lady Lions winning 2-0 on Nov. 18 and RIT recording a 2-1 win the following day. Yesterday, de Jonge stopped all 26 shots she faced for her first collegiate shutout in a 5-0 win. Rust and
Taylor Thurston (Kanata, Ontario/All Saints Catholic) had three assists apiece.
This marked RIT's first weekend sweep since Oct. 23-24, 2015 at Union and first weekend sweep of a CHA rival since knocking off Robert Morris in the 2015 CHA First Round series on Feb. 27-28, 2015. RIT has recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 2014-15 season as well.
RIT is off next weekend, but returns to action on Feb. 10-11 for a pair of road games at CHA rival Robert Morris University.
