ROCHESTER, NY – Lou Spiotti Jr., Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at RIT, is proud to announce the appointment of Bethany Schlegel as Assistant Director of Athletics at the university. Schlegel will begin at RIT on August 1.
Schlegel arrives at RIT after serving as the assistant director for athletics at Division I Iona College. At Iona, Schlegel was an academic advisor, monitoring the progress and coordinating services for Iona's student-athletes. In addition, she assisted the athletic director for compliance and was a co-advisor to the Iona Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Schlegel also was the home event supervisor for women's soccer and women's lacrosse and was part of the game day administrative staff for men's and women's basketball.
We are pleased to welcome Bethany to the RIT Athletics family," said Spiotti. "We're excited to be able to bring someone of her skill and experience to our organization."
Prior to arriving at Iona, Schlegel served as the assistant director of athletics at Finger Lakes Community College. At FLCC, her primary duties included academic advisement of student-athletes, NJCAA eligibility and compliance, and event supervision of home athletics, among other roles. In addition, Schlegel oversaw scheduling for all 14 athletic programs, as well as scheduling of all on campus facilities, including competition, practice, and recreation and intramurals.
"I am extremely excited to be returning to the Rochester area and to be continuing my career within the athletics department at RIT," said Schlegel. "I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of a great institution within the Rochester community and look forward to working with the RIT staff and the talented student athletes who all have shown a commitment to excellence. I am excited to be able to join a student centered environment that promotes strong core values and fosters a positive experience for all student athletes."
Schlegel earned her bachelor's degree in physical education and health sciences from The College at Brockport in 2009 and master's degree in athletics administration, also at Brockport in 2012.
A four-year student athlete, Schlegel starred on the Brockport volleyball team as a libero/defensive specialist from 2005-08. She helped lead the Eagles to a berth in the 2007 NCAA Tournament and in four seasons, appeared in 148 matches, compiling 1,774 digs and 109 service aces.
After graduation, Schlegel stayed at Brockport as an assistant volleyball coach from 2009-2012. In 2012, she was named interim head coach before heading to FLCC. Schlegel served as an assistant volleyball coach at FLCC for the last three seasons.
