Livecchi's overtime goal lifts women's lacrosse to dramatic win over Skidmore

Tigers led 11-6 before Skidmore scored five straight; Tigers keep playoff hopes alive

ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) scored 20 seconds into overtime to give the RIT women's lacrosse team at 12-11 win over Skidmore College. With the win RIT improves to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in the Liberty League. Skidmore falls to 8-7 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League. The Tigers are one game out of the playoff race with one game to play, trailing Skidmore and St. Lawrence for fourth in the league standings.

The Tigers led 11-6 with less than nine minutes to play in regulation, but Skidmore rallied by scoring five straight goals, including the game-tying goal with seven seconds to play by Cas Szwajkowski to send the game into overtime. She scored all five Skidmore goals down the stretch.

In the overtime, Livecchi was fouled inside the 8-meter arc. She stepped up and fired a low shot into the net, beating Skidmore goalie Megan Kolopsky with a clean shot.

Livecchi led RIT with five points on four goals and an assist. Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) each scored three goals, while Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Maegen Schmauder each scored a goal for the Tigers.

Sophia Wojnovich (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) was outstanding in net for RIT, making a career-high 16 saves, earning the win. Kristina Glitch (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) and Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) each caused two turnovers, while Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) led RIT with five ground balls. Sarkis and Leone each had four grounds balls. Mandell led RIT with six draw controls.

Szwajkowski led Skidmore with five goals. Tyler Phillips added four goals, while Emma Harris scored two goals. Kolopsky took the loss in net, making six saves.

Sarkis gave RIT an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals to open the game. Skidmore responded with two straight goals, tying the score at 2-2 on Phillips second goal of the game with 13:58 to play in the half.

Mandell and Schmauder scored consecutive goals for RIT, giving the Tigers a 4-2 lead on Schmauder's goal off an assist from Livecchi with 6:05 to play in the first half. After another Phillips goal cut the RIT lead to 4-3, Bingo scored with 46 seconds to play, giving RIT a 5-3 halftime lead.

The Tigers came out firing in the second half, tallying the first four goals of the half. Livecchi scored the first two goals of the half for RIT, while Mandell scored the other two, including an unassisted goal with 23:35 to play that gave RIT its largest lead of the game at 9-3.

Phillips broke the RIT run with her free position goal with 19:58 to play, but RIT answered right back with a goal from Sarkis with 17:19 to play to give RIT a 10-4 lead.

Harris tallied two straight for the Thoroughbreds, cutting the RIT lead to 10-6 on her free position goal with 13:10 to play in regulation.

Livecchi made it 11-6 RIT with her unassisted goal with 8:24 to play, but Skidmore rallied. Szwajkowski scored all five goals for Skidmore, tying the game at 11-11 on a free position goal with seven seconds to play in regulation. That set up Livecchi's game winning goal in overtime.

Shots were 35-30 in favor of Skidmore, who held a slight 25-24 ground ball advantage. The Tigers won 10-of-24 draw controls and went 17-of-23 on clearing attempts. RIT caused 10 turnovers and went 1-of-5 on free position attempts.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, April 30 when the Tigers host Rensselaer in the regular season finale. The Tigers will honor its four seniors, Mariah Hettel (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), Leone, Mandell, Sarkis prior to the game at 3 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
