Women's lacrosse drops second straight game by two goals at league foe St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY - The RIT (3-6, 0-2 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team was defeated by St. Lawrence University (6-4, 2-0 Liberty League) 12-10 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon. It is the second straight day that RIT fell by a pair of goals in league play, having fell to Clarkson, 11-9 on Friday.

Senior Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led RIT with six points on four goals and two assists. Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) finished with four points on three goals and an assist, and Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) added a pair of goals. Sammy Ward (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had the other RIT goal.

Shots were 28-25 in favor of RIT. St. Lawrence won the ground ball battle, 14-6, while RIT won 15-of-24 draw controls. The Tigers went 13-of-17 on clearing attempts, and wre 4-of-14 on free position attempts.

Chloe Knapp led St. Lawrence with three goals. Kara Hurley, Caroline Bailey, and Alexandra LaMotte each had a pair of goals for the Saints. Olga Lukas got the win in net, making eight saves. Elizabeth Hughes (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) got the start in net, making one save in 22 minutes of action. Sophia Wojnovich (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) played the final 38 minutes and made five saves.

RIT fell behind early in the first half as St. Lawrence came out and scored the first three goals of the game. Bailey gave the Saints a 1-0 lead on her goal 51 seconds into the game. Knapp scored two straight for the Saints to make it 3-0 St. Lawrence less than six minutes into the game.

Mandell converted a free position attempt with 22:21 to play in the first half to get RIT on the scoreboard. LaMotte tallied two straight for St. Lawrence, increasing the Saints lead to 5-1 with 10:04 to play in the half.

Sarkis converted her own free position attempt with 8:43 to play to make it 5-2. After an Owens goal made it 6-2, Sarkis scored her second free position goal of the half to make it 6-3 St. Lawrence going into the break.

That goal gave RIT a little momentum heading into the second half. Mandell scored te opening goal of the half to make it 6-4 St. Lawrence. Livecchi got into the scoring act with her first of the game at the 23:15 mark, making it a 6-5 Saints lead.

St. Lawrence would answer with three straight goals, taking a 9-5 lead on Greta Massey's goal with 14:49 to play in regulation. Kayla Schmalz and Hurley also scored in that stretch.

RIT kept fighting, pulling to within 9-6 on Ward's goal off an assist from Livecchi with 13:24 to play. Sarkis converted her third free position attempt of the game with 12:54 to play to make it a 9-7 game.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, key goals from Knapp and Bailey made it a four-goal cushion for St. Lawrence. Bailey's goal with 44 seconds to play gave the Saints a 12-8 lead. Livecchi kept it close, tallying goals with 34 and 20 seconds remaining, respectively to make it a 12-10 final.

RIT returns to action on Friday, April 8 when they host University of Rochester at 4 p.m.
