ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 2 RIT men's lacrosse team improved to 12-0 overall and 5-0 in the Liberty League after a 19-6 win over Union College (7-6, 2-3 Liberty League) on a sun-drenched Tiger Stadium Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Tigers have won 52 straight regular season games.
RIT led 7-1 after the first quarter, and 9-4 at the half. The Tigers out scored Union 4-0 in the third quarter to lead 13-4, and scored six times in the fourth quarter to go on to the 19-6 win.
Shots were 51-32 in favor of the Tigers, who won the ground ball battle 45-28. The Tigers won 16-of-29 face-offs and went 23-of-25 on clears. The Tigers went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) led RIT with six points on five goals and an assist.
Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) tallied five points on four goals and an assist, while
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy),
Drew Tosaya (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) and
Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) each scored a pair of goals. Nine different Tigers scored on Saturday, while
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) dished out a pair of assists.
Nick Nesbitt (Burlington, Ontario/Salisbuury School) got the win in net for RIT, making 15 saves. Hossack won 7-of-11 face-offs with three caused turnovers and nine ground balls.
Patrick Hannigan (Hanover, MA/Hanover) and
Trevor Smyth (Orangeville, Ontario/The Kiski School) each caused four turnovers. Hannigan grabbed four ground balls.
Brandon Buscaglia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) won 9-of-16 draws and had three ground balls.
Peter Richardson led Union with two goals, while Nolan Stauffer and Jordan Cooper each had a goal and an assist. Tom Lawton won 10-of-22 face-offs and Sam Bebout took the loss in net, making 14 saves.
The Tigers scored the first three goals of the game, taking a 3-0 lead on Wallace's 17th of the season. LoBosco opened the scoring off an assist from Levick at the 12:50 mark. Lee made it 2-0 Tigers on his 35th goal of the season off an assist from Ursu.
Stauffer broke the RIT scoring run with his goal at 8:52 of the first quarter, off an assist from Jack Scheufele. RIT rattled off four straight goals to end the quarter, leading 7-1 at the end of the quarter. Sterzin scored twice, and Lee added two late goals to give the Tigers an early six-goal lead.
Richardson opened the second-quarter scoring on his goal off an assist from Stauffer to cut the RIT lead to 7-2. Lee and Wallace scored consecutive goals, extending RIT's lead to 9-2 on Wallace's goal off an assist from Sterzin at the 9:24 mark of the second quarter. Union tallied two late goals to make it 9-4 RIT at the half.
RIT scored the only four goals of the third quarter, extending their lead to 13-4 on Tosaya's first of the game. Sterzin scored twice in the third quarter, while Levick added a goal for the Tigers.
Tosaya, Levick, Lee,
Beau Riley (Homer, NY/Homer),
Dave Shuster (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep) and
Alex Bodin (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best) all scored for RIT in the fourth quarter, while Richardson tallied the lone Dutchmen goal.
With the win, RIT improves to 17-3 all time versus Union, including an 11-0 mark since the Tigers joined the Liberty League in 2012.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, April 19 when the Tigers host former Empire 8 rival Ithaca College at 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
