Women's lacrosse drops home contest to Liberty League rival William Smith

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (4-7, 1-3 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team was defeated 15-6 by William Smith College (5-6, 4-1 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from sunny Tiger Stadium on Friday afternoon.   

Shots were 30-13 in favor of William Smith. The Herons won the ground ball battle 20-17, while the Tigers won 15-of-23 draw controls. The Tigers went 7-of-11 on clearing attempts and were 1-of-3 on free position attempts.

Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led RIT with four points on three goals and an assist. Maegen Schmauder, Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) and Mariah Hettel (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) each scored a goal, and Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) dished out an assist.

Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) led RIT with four caused turnovers. Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), Sarkis, Jordan Guerrieri (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) and Livecchi each had two ground balls, while Mandell led the Tigers with eight draw controls. Elizabeth Hughes (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) took the loss in net, making seven saves.

Allie Flaherty and Melissa Moore led William Smith with three goals apiece. Hannah Connolly and Ella Calder each had a goal and two assists, while Alexandra Bird and Kelsi Carr each scored a pair of goals. Sarah Honan got the win in net for the Herons, making six saves.

William Smith opened the scoring when Emy Stratton scored off an assist from Connolly at the 26:37 mark of the half. Sarkis tied the score on her 40th goal of the season. The Herons rattled off four straight goals, taking a 5-1 lead on Calder's goal at the 3:26 mark of the first half.

Livecchi scored on a nice pass from Sarkis with 3:06 to play in the opening half to cut the lead to 5-2. But the Herons closed out the first half with three straight goals, taking an 8-2 lead on Moore's tally with one second to play.

Moore opened the scoring in the second half, giving the Herons a 9-2 lead on her goal off an assist from Calder less than four minutes into the half. Sarkis converted a free position attempt at the 22:54 mark of the second half to make it 9-3 William Smith.

William Smith put the game away with three straight goals midway through the half, taking a 12-3 lead on Flaherty's free position goal with 5:50 to play.

The Tigers tried to mount a comeback, scoring three straight goals as the second half wound down. Hettel scored off an assist from Mandel with 5:34 to play. Sarkis tallied an unassisted goal, and Maegen Schmauder scored off a defensive lapse by William Smith to make it 12-6.

The Herons tacked on three late goals to make it a 15-6 final. William Smith is 5-1 all time versus the Tigers.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, April 16 when they host No. 20 Union College at 3 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
