Softball scores nine runs in game two win to earn doubleheader split at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY – The RIT softball team (7-9, 1-3 Liberty League) earned a road split on Sunday at Liberty League foe Union College (5-11, 2-2 Liberty League), losing game one, 3-1, while rebounding to earn a convincing 9-1 win in five innings to claim game two.

In the opener, RIT scored in the opening inning on the strength of three hits, despite leaving a pair of runners on base.

Union would score all three runs in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded double by Courtney Casey. Dana Dolinko would pick up the win on the mound, scattering six hits, while striking out batters. Casey was 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs.

Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) took the loss in game one for RIT, despite throwing a complete-game four hitter with six strikeouts. Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West) and Alexandria Lunderman (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) both went 2-for-3, while Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) drove in RIT's lone run, her team-best 17th of the season.

RIT would pour it on offensively in game two, scoring four times in the first inning, two in the third, and three in the fifth for the nine-run outburst on nine hits.

Junior catcher Sam Killian (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) had a career-best performance at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, her first collegiate home run, and five RBIs. She doubled in a run to give RIT a 2-0 lead in the first inning, slammed a two-run homer to left center field in the third inning to give RIT a 6-0 cushion, and singled in a pair of runs in the fifth to make it 8-1.

Freshman Sarah Thayer (Tully, NY/Fabius-Pompey) went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Danielle Hotz (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, while Lunderman scored a pair of runs. On the mound, Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) earned the complete-game win, scattering five hits and four walks, while striking out three batters.

RIT returns to action with back-to-back home doubleheaders, versus Alfred University on Wednesday at 3 p.m., and nationally-ranked St. John Fisher on Thursday, also at 3 p.m.
