ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 3 RIT (2-0) men's lacrosse team hosted Montclair State in the Tigers home opener on Saturday and defeated the Red Hawks 11-4 from RIT's Turf Field. The Tigers have now won 41 straight regular season games.
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) led RIT with three goals.
Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had a goal and an assist, while
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) and
Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) each tallied a pair of goals.
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy),
JD Hall (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe) and
Beau Riley (Homer, NY/Homer) each had goals for the Tigers, who out shot Montclair State, 43-25.
The Tigers won the ground ball battle, 40-24 and went a perfect 21-of-21 on clearing attempts. RIT did not have a man-up opportunity, while the Tigers won 9-of-19 face-offs. In goal,
Nick Nesbitt (Burlington, Ontario/Salisbuury School) picked up his first win as a Tiger, making 16 saves. Hossack and
Patrick Hannigan (Hanover, MA/Hanover) led the Tigers with six ground balls apiece.
Brett Mangan led Montclair State with two goals, while Zach Schreck and Brady Wulster each scored a goal. Lucas Jones took the loss in net for the Red Hawks despite making 13 saves.
RIT led 4-1 after the first quarter, and 6-1 at halftime. The Tigers scored twice in the third quarter and three times in the fourth.
Wallace opened the scoring on his unassisted goal at the 13:49 mark of the opening quarter, and Hossack gave RIT a 2-0 lead on his first goal of the season at 12:12 of the first. Lee scored off an assist from Sterzin at 10:56 to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Mangan got Montclair State on the board when he scored off an assist from Wulster at 9:59 of the first quarter, making it 3-1 Tigers. Lee rounded out the scoring with his goal with 41 seconds to play in the quarter, making it 4-1 Tigers.
The only two goals in the second quarter came in the final three minutes. Levick scored off a feed from Riley with 2:43 to play in the half, increasing the RIT lead to 5-1. Wallace tallied 44 seconds before halftime giving the Tigers a 6-1 lead at the break.
The Red Hawks scored the first two goals of the third quarter, pulling to within 6-3 on Mangan's man-up goal at 11:25. Schreck opened the scoring in the third with his unassisted goal 34 seconds earlier.
Hall converted a nice fast-break for the Tigers at 10:02 of the third quarter, giving RIT a 7-3 lead. Hossack and
Trevor Smyth (Orangeville, Ontario/The Kiski School) worked the give-and-go to perfection with their long sticks, as Hossack scored with 7:35 to play, making it 8-3 Tigers.
Riley scored a nice goal on a drive early in the fourth quarter giving the Tigers a little breathing room at 9-3. Wulster kept the pressure on with his goal at 11:26 of the fourth. Goals from Lee and Sterzin midway through the quarter sealed the win for the Tigers.
RIT's defense held Montclair to just four goals. The Tigers have allowed 13 goals in two games this season.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, March 9 when the Tigers face No. 7 SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University.
