SYRACUSE, NY -- Junior
Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) scored with 5.8 seconds to play in regulation to give the No. 2 RIT (9-0) men's lacrosse team an 11-10 win over No. 13 Middlebury College (4-4) in non-conference from The Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University on Wednesday. The Tigers have now won 49 straight regular season games, and finish the year 2-0 at the Dome.
With time running out in regulation, Wallace took a feed from
Beau Riley (Homer, NY/Homer) and buried a shot into the upper corner to break the 10-10 tie. Wallace finished with five points on four goals and an assist. He nearly gave RIT an 11-9 lead with four minutes left, firing a shot from in close off the post.
Shots were 46-31 in favor of RIT, who also won the ground ball battle 44-18. The Tigers won 17-of-26 face-offs and went 15-of-17 on clearing attempts, while holding the Panthers to 17-of-21 on clears. Middlebury scored on it lone man-up, while the Tigers went 3-for-5.
Wallace had four goals and an assist, while
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) and
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy) each had three goals and two assists for the Tigers.
Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had a goal and an assist, and Riley dished out a pair of assists, including the helper on Wallace's game winner.
Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) won 16-of-25 face-offs and had five ground balls.
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) led the Tigers with eight ground balls and had two caused turnovers.
Patrick Hannigan (Hanover, MA/Hanover) and
Josh Harris (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) each had three ground balls.
Jarryd Lee (Melbourne, Australia/St. Leonards) got the win in net for RIT, making 10 saves.
Sean Carroll, Cedric Rhodes, Jack Cleary and Henry Riehl each had a pair of goals to pace the Panthers, while John Jackson went 9-of-24 on face-offs with two ground balls. Will Ernst took the loss in net, making 13 saves.
Riehl gave Middlebury an early lead, scoring off an assist from Tim Giarusso just 52 seconds into the game. Lee scored an unassisted goal at 11:35 of the first quarter. Rhodes gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead on his goal at the 7:32 mark of the quarter. Wallace took a feed from Sterzin with 5:15 to play, tying the score at 2-2, but Cleary made a great move and score with 2:09 to play to give Middlebury a 3-2 lead.
Levick scored off a feed from Lee to open the second-quarter scoring, tying the game at 3-3. Cleary scored his second with 7:44 to play in the half to give the Panthers the lead. Wallace scored off an assist from Levick with 7:05 to play in the half, tying the score at 4-4 heading into the intermission.
Lee gave RIT its first lead of the game on his goal at the 11:55 mark of the third quarter. Riehl tied the score before Sterzin scored off an assist from Wallace to give RIT a 6-5 lead.
Middlebury tallied four straight goals, taking a 9-6 lead on Giarusso's goal with 2:34 to play in the third quarter. Carroll had two goals, while Rhodes added a goal for the Panthers in that run.
Levick and Lee combined to score the Tigers last two goals of the third quarter. Lee pulled RIT to within 9-8 with four seconds to play in the third quarter off an assist from Riley.
Wallace opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, scoring off an assist from Levick, tying the score at 9-9. Levick gave RIT a 10-9 lead with 4:19 to play in regulation. The Panthers answered right back, tying the score at 10-10 on Kyle Soroka's goal with 3:11 to play.
Middlebury had a chance down the stretch to score, but RIT's defense tightened and forced the Panthers into a turnover. The Tigers cleared the ball, called timeout to set up the game winning goal. Hossack won the ensuing face-off and killed off the final six seconds on the clock.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, April 2 when the Tigers face Liberty League rival, No. 8 St. Lawrence University at 12 p.m. in Canton, N.Y.
