BROCKPORT, NY - The RIT baseball team (9-5) scored three times in each of the first two innings to build a 6-0 lead and withstood a rally to defeat The College at Brockport (15-6), 8-4 at the Clark V. Whited Complex on a warm, sunny, Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers have now won seven straight games.
RIT jumped on the Golden Eagles right away, scoring three times in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. With two outs,
Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) singled in
Dom Scialabba (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) to open the scoring. After
Brian Battaglia (Sliver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) singled and
Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) was hit by a pitch,
Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) reached on an error, scoring both baserunners to make it 3-0.
In the second inning, Gabe Blasi and Zabel singled to open the inning, and both executed a double steal.
Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) singled to right center, scoring both baserunners, to make it 5-0. After Gorman stole second, Battaglia drove him in to make it 6-0.
Brockport would chip away at the RIT lead, scoring twice in the fourth, once in the fifth, and once in the seventh inning to make it a 6-4 game. The Tigers would add two runs in the ninth inning on a run scoring single by Scialabba and bases loaded walk by Zeglen.
Zabel was 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases, while Battaglia recorded two hits and Blasi scored twice. Overall, RIT out-hit Brockport, 10-9.
Brett Bouchard (Fairport, NY/Fairport) picked up his first win of the season on the mound, allowing four hits and one run over 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Tom Dillon (Oswego, NY/Oswego) started, throwing two shutout innings before giving way to
Mike Cardone (Patchogue, NY/Patchouge-Medford).
Kyle Povlock (Fairport, NY/Fairport) earned his first collegiate save, allowing just one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings.
Greg Ruddy and Wesley Burghardt had two hits apiece to lead the Golden Eagles. Brockport used six pitchers in today's contest.
RIT is right back in action on Friday with a single game at St. John Fisher that gets underway at 4 p.m.
