CLERMONT, FL -- The RIT (3-4) women's lacrosse team rebounded from a heartbreaking loss on Monday with a 16-8 win over Farmingdale State (1-5) at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida Thursday morning.
RIT led 8-3 at the half, and out scored the Rams, 8-5 in the second half to go on to the 16-8 win. Senior
Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led the Tigers with seven goals, while
Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) tallied three goals to pace the Tigers offense.
Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) tallied two goals and added an assist, while
Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored a pair of goals.
Sammy Ward (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) and
Maegan Schmauder (Franklin, MA/Franklin) each scored a goal for the Tigers who out shot Farmingdale State, 26-20.
The Tigers won 16-of-26 draw controls, and won the ground ball battle, 16-15. The Tigers went 15-of-17 on clearing attempts an were 1-for-4 on free position attempts.
Elizabeth Hughes (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) got the start in net, picking up the win and making three saves.
Sophia Wojnovich (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) played the entire second half and made three saves.
Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) led RIT with four ground balls, while
Cassie Swan (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) had three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Brittany Rosino led Farmingdale State with five goals. while Kristen Keller tallied a pair of goals. Krista Spagnoletta took the loss in net for the Rams, making seven saves.
RIT came out firing in the first half, scoring the first five goals of the game. Livecchi opened the scoring at the 23:44 mark of the first half, and scored two of the Tigers first five goals. Schmauder had a goal and Sarkis tallied two goals to give the Tigers an early lead.
Farmingdale State answered with three straight goals, cutting the RIT lead to 5-3 on a goal by Rosino off an assist from Janisha Sanchez with 5:12 to play in the first half. RIT scored the final three goals of the half, taking an 8-3 lead on Sarkis' fourth tally of the half with 10 seconds to play in the half.
Mandell opened the second-half scoring on her unassisted goal at the 25:08 mark of the half to give RIT a 9-3 lead. The Tigers scored the first five goals of the half, taking a commanding 13-3 lead on Bingo's goal with 13:20 to play in regulation. Bingo and Mandell each scored two of the Tigers first five goals of the half to break the game open.
Rosino and Alex Sparrow scored back-to-back goals for the Rams, but Sarkis cut off the run with two straight for the Tigers, extending the RIT lead to 15-5 on her seventh goal of the game with 10:18 to play. Ward added a final goal at 7:25, and Farmingdale State tacked on three late goals to make it a 16-8 final.
RIT returns to action on Friday, April 1 when the Tigers open Liberty League play at Clarkson University. The opening draw is at 4 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y.
