Baseball finishes play in Florida with 15-10 victory over St. Norbert

Tigers finish spring break trip with 3-2 record

WINTER HAVEN, FL – The RIT baseball team (4-5) scored early and often, finishing play in Florida in a 15-10 victory against St. Norbert (1-3) at the Chain Of Lakes Park on Monday night.

The Tigers were explosive on offense, tallying the 15 runs on 11 hits. RIT finishes up the spring break trip in Florida with a 3-2 record, winning two of the last three contests.

RIT took full advantage of five St. Norbert errors in the contest. The Green Knights scored 10 runs on 13 hits. Brian Sheridan (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) picked up the victory, his first of the season in relief. Sheridan, starter Mike Cardone (Patchogue, NY/Patchouge-Medford), and fellow relievers Jake Bianchi (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden), Ben Clough (Tolland, CT/Tolland), and Kyle Povlock (Fairport, NY/Fairport) combined for eight strikeouts. Matt Zacharias received the loss for St. Norbert.

The Tigers played this contest just over an hour after a 15-inning affair against Southern Maine. This game was a made up contest from Saturday afternoon due to stormy conditions. The Tigers jumped out to an 8-0 lead after runs in each of the first four innings. St. Norbert posted a big 4-run inning in the fifth to cut the lead in half, before adding another in the top of the sixth. The Tigers then added a 4-run inning of their own; a Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) RBI double, Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) RBI single, and a Brian Battaglia (Sliver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) two RBI single gave the Tigers the 12-5 lead.

Nearly each time St. Norbert tallied runs in the later innings, the Tigers responded with runs of their own.  After the Green Knights scored two more in the seventh, RIT got three more to extend the lead to 15-7. Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) drove in an RBI single, scoring Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence), and then Battaglia hit another 2-run single, scoring Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) and Gorman. St. Norbert tallied three additional runs, but Povlock shut the door, pitching a perfect two innings in relief to end the Green Knights threat.

A few Tigers had big individual performances at the plate. Sammon led the Tigers with three hits, going 3-for-4, driving in three runs. Battaglia drove in a career-high five runs, going 2-for-4. Zabel and Hogan each drove in two runs, while Gorman and Dom Scialabba (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) each drove in a run.

Hunter Larson and Tyler Brown were both perfect from the plate to lead St. Norbert. Larson went 4-for-4, driving in two runs. Brown went 2-for-2, with four RBIs.

Liberty League play looms for the Tigers, as they take on conference foe Clarkson in a home weekend doubleheader on Friday and Saturday at nearby Monroe Community College. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
