Softball drops pair of games to Stevens and Fredonia

CLERMONT, FL - The RIT softball team (1-3) dropped a pair of games at the Hancock Park Field on Sunday morning. The Tigers fell in game one to Stevens (3-0) 12-2, and 9-7 to Fredonia (2-4) in the finale.

In game one, Stevens struck first in the second inning, scoring off a Tiger miscue at first base. The Ducks then plated three runs in the bottom of the third, off a 3-run blast by Olivia Gemma. The Tigers got two runs back, first on a miscue by the catcher, scoring Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast), then getting another run as Alexandria Lunderman (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored from second on a heads-up play after an errant throw by the third baseman.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Ducks erupted for six runs, capped off by Gemma hitting her second home run of the game, this time scoring two runs to put up a 10-2 lead. The Tigers went down in order in the top of the fifth to end the contest. The Tigers were held to four hits in the contest, with Stevens getting its 10 runs off of seven hits.

In game two, it was the Tigers who struck first against Fredonia. Danielle Hotz (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) started her perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate, crushing the ball down the line for a solo home run in the bottom of the first. The Blue Devils struck back, getting three runs in the third and fifth innings to take the 6-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, RIT struck with two runs. Hotz singled up the middle, driving in Destiny Pacheco (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) and Emily Lazarus (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Catholic) drove in McKenzie Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) on the sacrifice fly.

After Fredonia added three runs in the sixth inning, the Tigers rallied back. Emma Sarles (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) drove a homer in her only hit of the contest to left field in the bottom of the frame. In the seventh inning, down five runs, Cook doubled to left, driving in two. Laura Weintraub (Syosset, NY/Syosset) later singled home Cook, reducing the deficit to two. Aldyn Carson then struck out Doret to end the threat.

The Tigers will play two games on Monday against the College of St. Benedict at 3 p.m., and Oberlin College at 5 p.m.
