Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) with 2:24 to play in overtime to give the No. 3 RIT men's lacrosse team (7-0) a thrilling come-from-behind win over No. 5 Cabrini (5-2) on day two of the Green Turtle Classic hosted by Stevenson University Saturday. The Tigers went 2-0 on the weekend, beating two ranked opponents and winning their 47th straight regular season game.
The Tigers failed to score in the first quarter, and trailed 6-1 in the second quarter before rallying to make it 6-4 at the half. RIT tallied three times in the third quarter, but trailed 9-7 heading into the fourth quarter. where the Tigers out scored the Cavaliers 3-1.
"It was a rough first three quarters," said RIT head coach
Jake Coon. "They (Cabrini) were hustling all over the field and forced us in to some turnovers."
Shots were 45-37 in favor of RIT, who also won the ground ball battle 35-24. The Tigers won 13-of-25 face-offs and went 12-of-16 on clearing attempts, while holding Cabrini to 10-of-12 on clears. The Cavaliers went 2-for-5 on man-up, while the Tigers were 0-for-5.
Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) led RIT with three goals. Lee added two goals and an assist, while
Jay Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had a goal and two assists. Levick,
Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport),
Anthony Contento (Homer, NY/Homer),
Josh Harris (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) and
Alec Sulesky (Medina, OH/Medina) each had a goal for the Tigers.
Contento won 10-of-22 face-offs and had five ground balls.
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) won three critical draws in the fourth quarter, and grabbed two ground balls. Harris led RIT with seven ground balls, while
Patrick Hannigan (Hanover, MA/Hanover) led the Tigers with two caused turnovers.
Jarryd Lee (Melbourne, Australia/St. Leonards) got the win in net for RIT, making nine saves.
Timmy Brooks led Cabrini with two goals and two assists, while Evan Downey added two goals and an assist. Kyle Bush added two goals, and Tyler Morrell got the loss in net, despite a tremendous effort, making 16 saves.
Cabrini scored the first three goals of the game, tallying the only goals in the first quarter. Bush gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead on his first goal of the day with 7:15 to play in the quarter. Brooks added a man-up goal, and Ethan Heisman scored with 1:46 to make it a 3-0 lead for Cabrini. It was the first time all season RIT had trailed in a game.
Sterzin scored with 12:32 to play in the second quarter, cutting the Cabrini lead to 3-1. But, the Cavaliers scored three straight goals, taking a 6-1 lead on a goal by Ryan Hannah with 7:16 to play in the half.
The Tigers rallied and ended the first half tallying three straight goals to trail 6-4 at the break. Harris gave the Tigers a lift with his goal off the face-off to cut the lead to 6-2. Wallace scored the first of his three goals with 2:37 to play to make it 6-3 Cabrini. Contento won the ensuing face-off and scored his first goal of the season to make it 6-4 Cabrini at the half.
"I told the guys at halftime we have to keep working on the little things," said Coon. "Get ground balls, ride hard and get a good flow on offense."
Dan Hopson opened the third-quarter scoring on his goal just 15 seconds in to make it a 7-4 Cabrini lead. Lee scored his first of the game at 11:47 of the third, cutting the lead to 7-5. Brooks made it 8-5 Cabrini with his goal at 10:29, but Wallace answered right back for RIT, scoring with 3:51 to play to make it 8-6.
After an Evan Downey goal made it 9-6, Sulesky closed out the scoring in the third quarter with his goal with 27 seconds to play making it 9-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Bush opened the scoring for Cabrini, giving the Cavaliers a 10-7 lead despite RIT dominating possession to open the fourth quarter. Morrell made four big saves for the Cavaliers to keep the RIT offense at bay. Wallace finally broke through when he score off a feed from Vakiener with 5:42 to play, cutting the lead to 10-8.
Vakiener took the ball on a sweep from up top and scored with 3:19 to play to pull the Tigers to within a goal at 10-9. Lee and Vakiner combined on a nice two-man game, with Vakiener feeding Lee for the goal with 2:15 to play, tying the score at 10-10. RIT had a chance with time running out in regulation, but the Cabrini defense held RIT out.
Hossack won the opening face-off of overtime and got RIT the critical possession. After a RIT timeout, Lee and Levick worked the two-man game. Lee fed a cutting Levick who beat Morrell with a well-placed shot to give the Tigers the win.
"Games like this help a great deal as the year goes on," said Coon. "It shows how we can deal with adversity and showed the character of this team."
RIT returns to action on Saturday, March 26 when they host Liberty League foe Clarkson University at 1 p.m.
