PITTSFORD, NY – Jessica Locey scored with 21 seconds left in the extra period, as Nazareth (4-0) came back from a late three-goal deficit to beat the RIT women's lacrosse team (1-3), 14-13 in overtime on Tuesday afternoon.
On the offensive break, Kate Rothrock found Locey, who had a clear chance at net. She stutter-stepped, bouncing a shot that beat RIT goaltender Elizabeth Hughes (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) low for the victory. Nazareth scored the last four goals between the two sides, including a tally with 10 seconds left in regulation. Carly Gates scored her eighth of the season unassisted, running down the field off the RIT turnover at midfield. The Tigers had a chance to win it, getting the ball off the draw, as Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) had a shot at net from outside the crease, but the shot went wide as the horn sounded.
Livecci and Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) each tallied five points off of three goals and two assists to lead the Tigers. Sarkis and Livecci each have a team-leading nine goals on the season. Sammy Ward (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) scored three goals for the second time in three games, as well as tallying an assist. Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) netted two goals and an assist, and Maegen Schmauder scored two goals. Hughes stopped six shots, giving her 49 saves in four games this season.
Haley DeVona led Nazareth with five goals on 10 shots, adding two assists. Gates tallied three goals, while Rothrock added two goals and two assists. In goal, Mackenzie Corbett stopped six shots in 49 minutes of play. Brianna Rizzari played the final 13:21, picking up the victory with one save.
"Offensively I thought that we are starting to click, but we need to finish games," said RIT women's lacrosse head coach Jeff McGuigan. "That's something we talked about before the season started, and we need to play with some composure at the end of games."
Nazareth outshot RIT 32-27, while the Tigers had a 13-11 advantage in ground balls. RIT forced 11 Nazareth turnovers.
RIT came on strong in the second half, after Nazareth staked out a 7-6 halftime lead at the break. With the two-man advantage after a pair of yellow cards, Livecchi made the Golden Flyers pay, as she took a pass from Mandell, firing a shot in net to tie the game. Mandell scored one of her own four minutes later, on a great individual effort that gave the Tigers the lead, at 8-7. DeVona scored and helped on a Katie Carroll goal, as the Golden Flyers retook the 9-8 lead.
From there, it was the Sarkis and Ward show. Sarkis drew two fouls, converting on two free position chances, and Ward flew down the middle of the field, finishing low to push the Tigers on a 3-0 run. After a Nazareth goal, Ward fed Schmauder for the goal, then converted on a free position try with the man advantage, giving the Tigers the 13-10 lead. From there, Nazareth scored three goals in a 2:19 span to send the contest into overtime.
The Tigers will head to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Buffalo State College on Thursday at 4 p.m., before the team leaves for two games in Florida.
