GENEVA, NY — The RIT women's soccer team (7-9-1, 3-5-0 Liberty League) fell 2-0 on the road against conference foe, and the top ranked team in the country, William Smith (16-0-0, 8-0-0 Liberty League) on Saturday afternoon from Cozzens Field.
William Smith out-shot RIT 19-2, including a 12-2 edge in shots on target. RIT goalie
Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) made 10 saves.
The Herons broke a scoreless tie in the 25th minute, when Kristina Camaj found the back of the net on a breakaway, with an assist from Brie Ruane. William Smith went into halftime leading 1-0, and scored once more, in the 72nd minute, as a header sent on goal by Megan Richard found the twine. The Herons' second goal was assisted by Theresa Lohr.
The Tigers defended all seven corner kicks for the Herons, and did not have a corner of their own offensively.
Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and
Sami Alur (Fremont, CA/Irvington) had the RIT shots.
William Smith, the No. 1 team in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III national poll, has not allowed a goal since Sept. 17 against Rochester, spanning 10-plus games.
"I'm really proud of the effort we gave today," said head coach
Liz Masterson. "We battled for 90 minutes and showed tremendous character."
The Tigers missed out on the Liberty League postseason tournament for the first time since joining the league in 2011, and finished with seven wins this season, including three in conference play.
