Men's hockey looks to stay hot with weekend trip to league foe Sacred Heart

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's hockey team looks to continue its winning ways, as they head to Sacred Heart for a pair of games from the Milford Ice Pavilion on Friday, Jan. 22 and Saturday, Jan. 23. Both contests begin at 7:05 p.m.
 
The Tigers (10-10-2, 10-5-1 Atlantic Hockey) enter the weekend having won three straight contests and six of their last seven games overall. Last weekend, RIT swept Atlantic Hockey foe Bentley on the road, winning 3-2 on Friday and 6-3 on Saturday. On Friday, Alexander Kuqali (Pittsburgh, PA/Sioux City Musketeers), Mark Logan (Calgary, Alberta/Brooks Bandits ), and Todd Skirving (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sioux Falls Stampede) scored, while Christian Short (Vaughan, Ontario/Surrey Eagles) made 32 saves. On Saturday, Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals) dished out a career-high four assists, while Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) recorded his 100th career point, finishing with a goal and two assists, while Caleb Cameron (Sundridge, Ontario/Listowel Cyclones) scored twice and added an assist. Garrett McMullen (Churchville, NY/Trail Smoke Eaters), Logan, and Chase Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) also scored, while Short made 27 saves.
 
Mitchell became the ninth player since RIT moved to Division I in 2005 to record 100 points for his career on Saturday. He has 29 career goals and 73 assists. He also moved into the top-five in career assists for the university's Division I era. Powell has nine points over his last five games and leads the team with 19 points on the season. The Tigers are now 7-0-1 on the road in Atlantic Hockey play this season, out-scoring foes 36-16. The eight-game unbeaten streak on the road in league play is one shy of the school mark, set during the 2008-09 season
 
On Tuesday, Kuqali was named the Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, while Logan earned Rookie of the Week honors. Five different RIT defenseman have earned Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.
 
Sacred Heart (9-11-3, 8-8-2 Atlantic Hockey) enters the weekend looking to move up in the league standings after a road split at Mercyhurst. The Pioneers lost 2-1 on Friday and rebounded to win, 6-4. Justin Danforth, the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week, leads the team in scoring with 25 points on 12 goals and 13 assists. Evan Jasper leads Sacred Heart with 15 assists and is second with 21 points. In goal, Brett Magnus is 9-9-3 with a 2.25 goals against average and a .924 save percentage. Its opponents are out-scoring Sacred Heart, 62-61 this season.
 
RIT is 19-5-2 all-time against the Pioneers and 7-3-1 from the Milford Ice Pavilion. The Tigers have won or tied 12 of the last 13 meetings against Sacred Heart. Last season, RIT went 3-1 against the Pioneers, winning both games at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
 
The Tigers are currently third in the Atlantic Hockey standings with 21 points, while Sacred Heart is tied for fifth with 18 points.  Just four points separate third and seventh place in the league standings.
