Men's basketball wins at Hobart for first time since 2005

GENEVA, NY -- For the first time since 2005, the RIT (8-7, 4-2 Liberty League) men's basketball team won at Hobart (6-8, 2-3 Liberty League), defeating the Statesmen 75-59 Tuesday evening in Liberty League action from Bristol Gym. The win is the first over the Statesmen since a 67-48 victory on Dec. 8, 2006, and the first win at Bristol Gym since Nov. 29, 2005.

"Coming off the weekend we had I thought our guys did a great job executing what we needed to do," said RIT head coach Bob McVean. "Our starters did a great job coming out and setting the tempo of the game."

Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) recorded his fifth double-double of the season, tallying 18 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Davis shot 8-of-15 from the floor and had two assists, a block and a steal. AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) and Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) each tallied 12 points, while Horde recorded six boards and dished out five assists, and Herman went 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.

RIT shot 42.9 percent from the floor on 27-of-63 shooting. The Tigers were 9-of-27 from three-point range, and went 12-of-16 from the foul line.

Jamal Lucas led Hobart with 20 points, two assists and five steals. Luke Ruddy added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Colin Dougherty scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Late in a tightly contested first half, Hobart took a 25-19 lead on a layup by Justas Valciukas with 5:08 to play. Horde tied the game with two quick 3-pointers, making it 25-25 with 4:10 to play. He drained both buckets 58 seconds apart.

Dougherty gave Hobart a 29-25 lead on his bucket with 3:26 to play in the opening half. RIT out-scored the Statesmen, 8-2 over the final 3:26, including six points from Davis, to take a 33-31 lead into halftime.

RIT opened the second half on a 9-1 run, taking a 42-32 lead on a 3-pointer by Anthony Lewis (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) at the 16:46 mark of the half. Herman built the Tigers lead to 13 points on his long range tally with 15:58 to play.

Herman drained another 3-pointer with 14:33 to play giving the Tigers their largest lead to that point at 53-37. That capped off a 20-6 run by the Tigers to open the second half. Justin Schneider (Aurora, NY/Southern Cayuga) gave RIT its largest lead of the game on a pair of free throws with 6:08 to play making it 64-47 Tigers. Hobart got within 12 down the stretch, but the Tigers kept the foot on the pedal to maintain the lead and pull away.

RIT scored 32 points in the paint, and 12 points off of nine Hobart turnovers. The Tigers scored six second chance points and got 22 points off the bench.

"I thought Anthony (Lewis) and Troy (Pierre-Louis) came in and did a great job for us tonight," said McVean. "To be 4-2 at this point in the conference schedule is a great. But we know there is still a long way to go."

RIT returns to action on Friday, Jan. 22 when the Tigers welcome Vassar College to Clark Gym for an 8 p.m. start. RIT plays its next four games and seven of its final 10 regular season contests at Clark Gym.
