ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's soccer team (1-0-1) scored two second-half goals en route to a 2-0 win over Allegheny College (0-2-0) in game one of the 2015 Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament on a steamy, Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and
Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) each scored for the Tigers who pick up their first win of the season.
"We showed our sharpness and fitness in this heat today," said RIT head coach
Liz Masterson. "We were able to play so many players and they all contributed. I think that wore Allegheny down, especially in the second half."
Shots were 17-3 in favor of the Tigers. Both sides took five corner kicks, while fouls were 7-3, Allegheny.
Sienna Fisher (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg Area) got the win in net for RIT, making three saves. Christina Gallagher took the loss for the Gators, making four saves.
The Tigers generated a good scoring chance early in the game when Parzych had a header hit off the cross bar off a service from
Maxine Culhane (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) in the fifth minute.
Culhane sent another service into the Allegheny penalty area in the 16th minute.
Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) laid off a pass for
Elena Wolfe (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) who fired a shot that was headed for the back of the net, but Gallagher was able to turn the shot aside.
After halftime, RIT finally broke through when Parzych tallied her first goal of the season in the 50th minute.
Gwen Neuhaus (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac) started the play with a corner kick. The attempted clear came back to Neuhaus who fed
Caitlyn Daly (Glendora, CA/St. Lucy's Priory). Daly found Parzych in front of the net and snuck a pass through that Parzych tapped home giving RIT a 1-0 lead.
In the 68th minute, Thiel was able to get around her defender and break in on Gallagher. She fired a shot that beat Gallagher to the top left corner for her first collegiate goal. That gave RIT comfortable, 2-0 lead.
With 18 minutes to play in regulation, Allegheny's Colleen Fleming fired a shot from 20 yards out that Fisher was able to gobble up and save for her first shut out of the season.
"I thought we took some positive steps forward today," said Masterson. "We need to continue to work hard and make progress every day and not get comfortable with where we are at today."
RIT returns to action on Sunday, September 6 when the Tigers host Emmanuel College in day two of the 2015 Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament. Kick-off at Tiger Stadium is 2 p.m.
